richalbin
I'm a new user using Affinity Photo 1.9.0 and noticed a serious problem when trying to open file. I've just started working through the Affinity Photo Workbook exercises using the resources/files downloaded from https://affin.co/photocoreskills Affinity Photo seems to have an issue opening these files (or any files it now seems). When I attempt to open a file I get the error message: FAILED TO OPEN FILE /Users/richsmith/Documents/Affinity Photo Files/photo_core_skills/Cropping/cropping_golden_spiral.jpg The file could not be opened because permission was denied. If I quit the application and try again I can open the file. However, as soon as I try to open another file I can't and need to quit again. Hardly, a viable workflow now is it. This is happening with all files reading through the posts this is a long standing issue. Why then isn't it fixed or what is the solution. In this present state your software is unusable. Please help or explain.
Staff Gabe Posted February 10, 2021 Staff Share Posted February 10, 2021 Hi @richalbin, Welcome to the forums. Did you purchase this from the Mac App Store? Or from our Store? I remember seeing some similar issues with the Mac App Store version when people have many fonts installed, due to sandboxing limitations. agregd
I have the same issue, in Affinity Designer. I updated to 1.9, changed the file name in iCloud and now neither the one open on my iMac and the iCloud version will allow it to be opened.I rebooted the computer and didn't make a difference. I also attempted to copy from iCloud to the desktop and it produces the same error. Now it seems I have lost my work, at least it issuing hold hostage. NOTE: previous Affinity Designer Documents seem to open just fine. See screenshot images
Staff Gabe Posted February 11, 2021 Staff Share Posted February 11, 2021 Hi @agregd, You have a different unrelated issue. Your error message says "File type not supported" and not "Permission Denied". The problem is not with the app, but with your file. If you look at its size, is Zero Bytes. 13 hours ago, agregd said: changed the file name in iCloud and now neither the one open on my iMac and the iCloud version will allow it to be opened Sounds like iCloud might not have synced properly. See if you can find the file using the web version if iCloud. If not, it's not much we can do with an empty file
agregd
Downloading from the web version of the cloud worked. Thanks, never thought of that
richalbin
Hi @Gabe, Thanks for your input. I did purchase from the App Store, However I'm a new user without loads of fonts so I don't think it is that issue. Plus the files I'm trying to open are simple image files and do not contain fonts. I have also tried saving the files in different locations and checked all file permissions, thinking that might be the problem - it isn't. I did fix this temporarily, by removing and reinstalling Affinity. This worked fine for a while but the issues is now back with a vengeance. The program is once more utterly unuseable. What should I do? Switch to Photoshop or is there some way I can get the attention of the Affinity developers to troubleshoot this annoying problem. richalbin
I'm so disappointed with this. I've emailed affinity support about this and they have so far ignored my emails. I still cannot open files or now it seems export files either. I've received better support with free Open Source software, this is no way to run a software company. agregd
I personally think this is a combination of iCloud web version vs on the Mac. I haven’t had a problem since abs I was able to recover my file from web version of iCloud
Staff Gabe Posted February 18, 2021 Staff Share Posted February 18, 2021 Sorry for the delayed reply. Can you try running the latest beta and see if that fixed it for you? If it's a sandboxing issue, the beta should work fine. https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/forum/19-photo-beta-on-mac/ You could try this and see if it's actually a font issue. roberttarabella
I have the exact same problem. I jumped through all the hoops suggested by Affinity. Turned off all fonts, etc. I can't open certain files, and can't save or export files from Affinity Photo. Problem doesn't happen with Affinity Designer. Problem never happened with Affinity Photo 1.8. UPDATE: PROBLEM SOLVED: Downloaded Pixelmator Pro. That app doesn't have this issue. I really would like Affinity to take responsibility for this error and issue an update.
richalbin
### UPDATE ### The beta license has now expired so once again the Affinity Photo software I paid for in good faith does not work and is preventing me from working. Can someone either: a) grant me unrestricted access to the beta OR b) fix the bug in the app store version of the release

The latest is 1.9.2.228, and if you were using an earlier version you should update to that one. If you have that one: beta licenses do not expire, exactly. For users of the apps that were purchased from the Mac App Store, they just require that you have an earlier retail release installed. Do you still have the 1.9.1 retail release installed?
