Help! Error: unable to load document

Recommended Posts

I just spent hours working on a file for a client. I backed out of the file to double check that it saved and now when I try to open it again it says "Loading Failed. Unable to load document."

I’ve already tried the following:

- closing affinity and opening it again
- restarting my ipad
- saving the file - it crashes when I try to save it

Does anyone know how to fix this?

Here’s a screenshot. The file isn’t supposed to be black.

Hi @lafasta,

If you have access to Mac you could try the steps on this post to see if you could recover the file.

From the home screen of Affinity where you see the blank thumbnail, if you tap on the icon that looks like 3 lines stacked above each other, there should be a duplicate option, if you tap that are you able to open the duplicate?

Unfortunately that is not really 'saving'. It updates the sandbox file but you need to use the Save menu option to create an afdesign file that can be copied, backed up, moved and shared. I thoroughly recommend changing you work flow so that immediately after creating a file, return to the project/Home Screen and tap the 3bar menu below your projects icon. Tap Save to create a real file in your default save folder (iPad or cloud depending on settings). Now when you edit, use the Document Save menu regularly.  Make a backup copy of the file in the default folder so that you have a recent copy shound the worst happen.

I think it can be avoided by instituting a workflow that involve saving immediately after creating a new file, Saving (manual save) is the only way to get a working version outside of the apps sandbox. That way you can backup/copy/duplicate/share the file.
