A couple of PS to AP ipad questions

Recommended Posts

Hi all

I’ve been doing some Photoshop courses and would like to see how much of it I can do in AP. I’m mostly able to transfer the techniques to AP but have run into a few stumbling blocks.

1)  how to set white and black points? In PS I’m using a couple of curves layers, pushing the sliders across and using the eyedroppers to set white and black points.  I’m aware that nothing like that exists in AP so I’ve tried using the shadow warning in develop to set the black point via exposure or curves but it seems that by the time I trigger the shadow clipping warning the image is much too dark.  Any suggestions?

2) how best to edit a mask? I’m aware Edit Mask doesn’t appear on the iPad but even editing a selection as a layer is slow and tedious as you need to switch back and forth between personas to turn the black overlay on and off and back into photo persona to use the brush.  Any suggestions for creating a nice hard mask of a cityscape?

im sure there are way more things I have already forgotten I couldn’t do, but see how you go with those ones at least.

Cheers!

Hi @Chris in NZ,

Welcome to the forum

Affinity Photo does not have a tool that allows you to set the White, Grey or Black point on the curves adjustment like you are able in PS but you can use the Levels adjustment to set the White and Black positions on the channels as per the following help

https://affinity.help/designer/en-US.lproj/index.html?page=pages/Adjustments/adjustment_levels.html?title=Levels adjustment

To edit a mask on the iPad select the mask layer then use the paint brush to add or remove from the mask area.

Hi, thanks for the reply.  I understand how to paint onto a mask but I am wanting to SEE the mask, in PS I option click the mask and I can see it in black and white, I can then paint in any bits I’ve missed. If I’m working on a cityscape I can see clearly exactly if I’ve missed any bits. I understand AP has this on the desktop version as ‘Edit Mask...’

Hi Chris, in AP on iPad you can use quickmask to see the mask as you select. If exporting as a mask layer the mask is always visible for editing. Just select the layer. You can also choose mask colour.

Theres a good video to show this.https://affinity.serif.com/en-gb/tutorials/photo/ipad/video/287262137/

You do it using the SOLO button! Works on all masks… FYI Make sure the mask is selected, not a pixel layer
