Publisher: The Stroke Panel

Recommended Posts

I am trying to get to grips with aspects of publisher that I never used before.  I have watched many you tube video tutorials and they are very good, unfortunately I am experienting with things that I can not find in any tutorial to date.

Unfortunately the Help documentation is silent on this particular tool under 'Stroke Panel".  I am confused as to why the Blue stroke line  has not changed according to the adjustments I made in the properties as seen here in the screen shot.

Microsoft - Like entering your home and opening the stainless steel kitchen door, with a Popup: 'Do you really want to open this door'? Then looking for the dishwasher and finding it stored in the living room where you have to download a water supply from the app store, then you have to buy microsoft compliant soap, remove the carpet only to be told that it is glued to the floor.. Don't forget to make multiple copies of your front door key and post them to all who demand access to all the doors inside your home including the windows and outside shed.

Apple - Like entering your home and opening the oak framed Kitchen door and finding the dishwasher right in front you ready to be switched on, soap supplied, and water that comes through a water softener.  Ah the front door key is yours and it only needs to open the front door.

Perhaps I"m confused about your intentions, but that's not the Stroke panel. That's a brush editing dialog. The Stroke panel is part of the studio (View > Studio > Stroke).

The title of the Stroke panel's brush editor is "Brush - Document Defaults" (as in your screenshot) when no object is selected. The title is "Brush - Selection" when an object that can have a stroke is selected. There does seem to be a selected object with a blue stroke in the screenshot, so I don't know why the stroke's brush editor is as if no object is selected.

Just a demonstartion of what is happening Walt.

I think you're describing the behavior of raster brushes. The question involves a vector brush, and as the context is Publisher it must be in the Designer Persona, which seems to act differently.

I'm talking about the vector brush editor that Chris26 is accessing.

The vector brush editing dialog behaves as Chris showed, from my experience. The raster brush editing dialog behaves as you described.

But as it turns out (Thanks for the added info, Chris.) it seems that Chris is not dealing with a vector brush. His object has a simple line stroke, not a texture-brush stroke specified in the Stroke panel. It appears that simple line strokes can't exhibit variance in size, opacity, etc. They have a simple width.

Chris: Try this stroke style setting:

(Note that this probably requires the Designer Persona.)

Hallo Walt, nothing works, so I suppose it can only be accessed through designer, seems strange though to have this as though it can be accessed from within Publisher?

Microsoft - Like entering your home and opening the stainless steel kitchen door, with a Popup: 'Do you really want to open this door'? I can assure you 100% that I was describing the vector brush editor that is available for a stroke in both the Publisher Persona and Designer Persona of Publisher. That is the editor that Chris26 showed.

The vector brush editor is available for a basic solid stroke, not just a textured stroke. It does allow opacity variance in addition to size variance to be given to a basic stroke. Such a stroke is then considered to have a vector brush (a true vector brush in this case, rather than the so-called vector brush with a raster texture).

It works in Publisher for me. I'm using a Mac, so maybe the functionality is broken in the Windows software.

For the width and opacity variance to appear on the object's stroke, you'll need to edit the stroke's pressure curve (the one in the Stroke panel, not the brush editor)

OK, Hooray, Got it. -  I saw this pressure curve and had no idea what it really meant so never thought to mess with it.  (I am not a designer and have very very basic knowledge of graphics, but I thought  it was about time I tackeled the scary stuff in Publisher - it's long overdue).

It's in Publisher Persona, too.

Yes, it's there and you can select it. But (for me) it doesn't work, just as it doesn't work in Photo or the Photo Persona of Publisher. It's a setting that requires vector brushes, and Publisher doesn't have any brushes. So, ,you can select it but in order to get it to be useful you need to be in the Designer Persona where the brushes live.

There is a vector brush in the Publisher Persona of Publisher. There is no Brushes panel there, but the true vector brush of Affinity is available and it is applied by making adjustments in the brush editor of a stroke (as shown by the animated GIF by Chris26). The reason Chris26's efforts were failing to succeed was that his object's stroke had no pressure curve.
