Affinity1219
Hello, I want to make this design look more realistic. How can I do that? Thank you all!
GarryP
What do you mean by “more realistic”. It looks pretty realistic to me already. You will have to give us more information about what you want to do.

GarryP
Ah, then you will probably need someone who’s an expert at lighting, and I’m not one of them. It will help anyone to help you if you can explain where the lighting will be coming from, e.g. from the right down near the bottom, or from the horizontal centre near the top, or something else. Also you may need to explain what sort of lighting you will need, e.g. spotlights, etc. Also, you may need to have some idea of whether you will be using a background of some sort as that may affect the lighting colours, e.g. ambient lighting and so forth. If you can give people more idea of these sorts of things then I’m sure someone will be able to help.

thomaso
With the exception of the top shelf, there are no drop shadows and almost no shiny areas, just a little in the black poles but none in the "marble" which is usually a high-gloss, non-matte material. So, is it realistic enough?
GarryP
Have you done a web image search for “marble shelving” and looked at the images of real products? E.g. https://www.amara.com/products/midnight-marble-rack-black (Not an advert, just an example.) Edited August 17, 2020 by GarryP
thomaso
To me it looks realistic but doesn't look like marble, more like a plastic surface. I guess it is more related to the thickness of the poles and the shelfs: it feels the poles couldn't carry the weight of the marble [ and the marble wouldn't carry much, too on that lenghts. edit: haven't noticed the horizontal poles. ] Quote macOS 10.14.6 | MacBookPro Retina 15" | Eizo 27" | Affinity V1

Yes there will be thin wood under them. Thank you!

thomaso
> how can I make that dropshadow? I would simply paint it with a brush. If you want to avoid painting then a masked gradient might work, too, but is a more complex workflow. thomaso
Depending on the task you have: One more thing that is currently making your object seem unrealistic (apart from a lack of gloss or reflection on the entire marble surface + edges): It wouldn't stand like this without being pinned somewhere, it would tend to tilt left or right. That's probably why the picture I found has 6 legs or why IKEA shelves have an X on the back. firstdefence
Curiosity question: have you made this image in a 3D app?
