I was able to uninstall my old version of Affinity designer.  I have attempted to reinstall the program and it still has the message Setup Failed.  Please help. I'm near tears because I want to learn this program!!!

Assuming you're running Windows, try the following fix:

1. Restart Windows.

2. Then, right-click on the installer .exe file and choose Run As Administrator.

If that doesn't work, press the Windows key and R, to get the Run dialog. Paste this into the Run box and press OK:

%Temp%\AffinitySetup

You'll get a File Explorer window, with some directories. Choose the newest one, open it, and attach the two files SetUp.log and SetupUI.log here. They will provide more information to diagnose the problem.

Your SetupUI.log file shows that the installer failed when it tried to remove the old version of Designer.

You could try uninstalling it yourself manually. Or you could try the Microsoft Uninstall Troubleshooter.

@walt.farrell

Hi Walt,

Could that be because the OP says in his/her opening post that he/she had uninstalled the "old version of Designer"?  IOW, the new version installation failed because the user had manually uninstalled the old version but an Installer Log (?) listed it as still installed?

Speaking personally, I've never uninstalled any "old" versions of any of the Affinity apps before running any update installers and, so far, have not experienced any of the many problems which I see other posters to the forum are seeing.

I have never manually uninstalled old versions either, and usually have no problems installing the updates. Once or twice I had to restart Windows before the installation would work, but I put that down to Windows Installer issues, which I think are more common than most users realize :)

I've done everything I know to do other than chunk this friggin computer out of the window.  Is there anyone who can walk me through this process?  I have only been able to update the program once. After 1.6 everytime I've attempted to update it tells me setup failed.

I suggested above that you try uninstalling the program manually yourself. Or that you try the Microsoft Uninstall Troubleshooter.

Did you try either of those? Or is that what you're now asking for help doing?

For a manual uninstall:

  1. Click on the Windows icon (lower left corner of your screen) then on the Cog (Settings) just above the Power icon.
  2. In the Windows Settings dialog, click on Apps.
  3. In the Apps and Features window, you'll get a list of applications. Scroll down to the Affinity Designer application.
  4. Click on it. Then click Uninstall.

If that doesn't work, tell us the error message(s) you get, or provide screenshots. (Note: if you don't see Designer in the list, you'll need to use the Microsoft Uninstall Troubleshooter.)

You can also try that Microsoft Uninstall Troubleshooter I mentioned. Just go to that Microsoft site and follow the instructions to run the program. Then tell it you're having trouble uninstalling a program, and go from there.
