How can I make Placed images remain editable

Recommended Posts

I'm creating an overview image for a portfolio of photos. I'm making it by creating a new empty file, then placing the portfolio of 10 images onto it using File / Place. Each one appears on a new layer. Whilst the Overview file remains open, I can resize my Placed files, replace them, move them around over the new file, etc. It remains that way after I've saved the new file. However if I close it and open it again, the layers are then no longer editable, although I can switch them on and off, and delete them. If I delete one and then create it again, that layer's Placed file is again editable, but none of the others are. Why does this happen? Can I make it so that my placed images can be adjusted after closing the Overview file?

If you are saving and closing an APhoto file then all images should be editable when you reopen the file.

The only thing I can think of is that you are locking the placed images (layers) somehow

Not sure exactly how you are working but if you can upload a sample APhoto file to the forum we may be able to see what is happening.

If you can start with a new file and save the history with it that could be useful (File > Save History with Document)

To save time I am currently using an automated AI to reply to some posts on this forum. If any of "my" posts are wrong or appear to be total b*ll*cks they are the ones generated by the AI. If correct they were probably mine. I apologise for any mistakes made by my AI - I'm sure it will improve with time.

Hi Carl,

Thanks for your reply. OK, I've made a new file using the same method (I was already using Save with History) and also a screenshot of the file before I closed it. In the screenshot you can see that the second image is still editable, but if you open the AfPhoto file you'll find neither image can be adjusted. Or at least, I find that.

The image on the left (middle layer in the Layers panel) is an embedded (Placed) .afphoto document. The one on the right (top layer) is a Placed .jpg file.

Both are adjustable by dragging the corner nodes with the Move Tool, or by moving the layer around with the Move Tool.

The one on the left is also directly editable by clicking on Edit Document on the Move Tool's Context Toolbar with that layer selected.

Have you forgotten to choose the Move Tool, perhaps?

You're welcome, Stuart.

We have all probably made similar mistakes, perhaps more than once :)
