andrej.resetniak@gmail.com Posted December 22, 2019 Posted December 22, 2019 (edited) Hi, Any idea why in Affinity those bokeh balls lose details (or smoothness)? Freshly opened RAW in Affinity photo Windows (top view) vs Sony imaging software / Capture One (bottom) Edited December 22, 2019 by andrej.resetniak@gmail.com Quote
Old Bruce Posted December 22, 2019 Posted December 22, 2019 Looks like the bottom pic has Chromatic Aberration and Colour de-fringeing corrections applied. andrej.resetniak@gmail.com Posted December 22, 2019 Author Posted December 22, 2019 I think you might be right. Feels like Affinity does not support my lens to apply corrections. I don't see difference in RAW then i open my ARW files from 90mm Sony FE lens i had before. Today i have only Zeiss Loxia 85mm and i feel its not supported. I hope will be some day? Quote
v_kyr Posted December 22, 2019 Posted December 22, 2019 Hmm, I'm no Sony shooter but with a Sony A7 iii test RAW image I can see similar things, which can be partly adjusted this way ... Original JPG should look like this ... Here what I've seen for the Sony A7 iii sample image in APh ... screencast.mp4 Quote ☛ Affinity Designer 1.10.8 ◆ Affinity Photo 1.10.8 ◆ Affinity Publisher 1.10.8 ◆ OSX El Capitan ☛ Affinity V2.3 apps ◆ MacOS Sonoma 14.2 ◆ iPad OS 17.2
andrej.resetniak@gmail.com Posted December 22, 2019 Author Posted December 22, 2019 If i press that button it only higlights with yellow those "clipped tones" then i press that button again, they just as was before Quote
v_kyr Posted December 22, 2019 Posted December 22, 2019 In the sample Sony RAW I've downloaded from https://www.photographyblog.com/reviews/sony_a7_iii_review/sample_images, if I load that image into APh it looks as default badly white overtoned for some yellow circle bokeh parts (those got instead badly white). When I press the "Show truncated overtones" button in APh afterwards overlayed bokeh circles look more how they should according to the corresponding JPG image shown own that site. - Thus I believe APh as default overtones certain bokeh colors here (makes them too white illuminating). https://img.photographyblog.com/reviews/sony_a7_iii/sample_images/sony_a7_iii_22.arw Quote ☛ Affinity Designer 1.10.8 ◆ Affinity Photo 1.10.8 ◆ Affinity Publisher 1.10.8 ◆ OSX El Capitan ☛ Affinity V2.3 apps ◆ MacOS Sonoma 14.2 ◆ iPad OS 17.2
Old Bruce Posted December 22, 2019 Posted December 22, 2019 I use some old Nikkor glass on my Canon and find the Chromatic Aberration default "Estimate from Image" setting to help a lot and then I can fix it some more later using the Filter > Colour > Chromatic Aberration . But the old glass (3 of them) have lots of other problems and I call it 'charm' or 'choice'. So its looking bit better, if you take any another example, it will highlight you with yellow other places. Quote

I still have some older Micro Nikkor lenses (from analog times) which are hard to beat in terms of charming image color reproduction, they still capture things with a different flair than the modern glas. You have to check in contrast with other RAW converters in order to see how those handle those bokeh regions per default and if those do apply automatically some chromatic aberration and other corrections then. andrej.resetniak@gmail.com Posted December 22, 2019 Author Posted December 22, 2019 as i've stated in first post, in Capture One, LR, Sony bundled viewers it looks like second picture, before any editing. I think Affinity don't have lens profile for my loxia, and that causing wrong conversion Quote

This post is more about "is it normal to have it wrong in affinity, or not". Some quick routines might be just easier to use inside one app, not switching between CP and Aff Quote
