  1. Yes it is. And now, reading the tool-tip, I see purple outline mentioned. I clearly misunderstood what the setting meant. Thank you, thank you. I now remember checking that box.
  2. I just opened my test doc myself, and for me, as well, it is just what I wanted, plain regular black. However, when I saved it to send you, it was magenta and bold, so the magenta doesn't save. Might I have changed some 'select' options? The magenta bold appears as the text is typed, or when it is moved or adjusted in any way. And the color doesn't go away when any other object or text is selected, adjusted, created, etc. Thus the document gradually changes from the desired black to magenta. It is quite annoying. I did this in the middle of working in a document, and I simply want the behavio
  3. How would I have done that? I didn't knowingly use magenta at all. I was (I thought) simply creating text using the settings of plain (or italic) text with black text color, adjusting only the point size. ( I am actually using 9 pt). And how would adding a stroke (if I did) carry over into a newly created document? I do mean bold as in "bold text". Im' attaching a newly-created doc to show what I mean. magenta text test doc.afdesign
  4. I'm a complete newbie to Affinity and Designer and vector drawing. I've been working with simple shapes and lines and text while exploring Designer. Once GarryP helped me get started, things were going well until yesterday when my plain and/or italic text turned bright bold magenta. I did not change the color that was the default in the text-color box. I do not know what I did to make this happen, whether creating new text, or moving previously created text. I cannot get rid of this color, or the bold. New text is bold magenta, despite the color box's being black. Moving previously-created te
  5. Thank you, thank you, thank you SolarDude and GarryP for your precise and thoughtful help. It is exactly what I needed to get my foot in the door of this new way of drawing. Now I hope I can play to my heart's content. It seems the trick to getting my text in my box is (1) to create the text box somewhere outside my rectangle, and (2) to move it in afterward. I was selecting the text tool, then clicking in the rectangle (steps 1 + 2 combined) which usurped the original rectangle — then I was lost. I guess there is something that I will have to learn about the philosophy of breaking down w
  6. I am an absolute newbie in drawing digitally (though not drawing physically). I set myself what I thought would be a simple beginner, teach-myself project using Designer. Your tutorials seem to start with an assumption of more basic knowledge (or jargon) than I have. I think my issue is a basic misunderstanding of layers, or deciding or managing the sequence of actions. Sorry to feel so stupid, but I am missing the "logic" of the process. [Maybe what is needed is a video tutorial at this level of (mis)understanding and decision-making.] My project: I want to draw some simple rectangula
  7. In a long text document I have a number of different image types I wish to caption. I want to be able to automatically number these — for example: Figure 1. Lorem ipsum. Figure 2. Alice went down. Chart 1. Latin alphabet. Chart 2. Characters in Alice. Map 1. Holy Roman Empire. Map 2. The rabbit hole. Question 1.) I am trying to create named text styles for these: Font, size, style, automatic numbers (presumably based on whether I name my style Figure Title, Chart Title, Map Title), etc. How do I get the word "Figure" or "Chart" or "Map" to appear
  8. My icons were in color when I first opened Publisher 1.7.0.140 on my MacBookPro, OS 10.13.5 I ticked the monochromatic iconography box to see what it was like. Now I cannot get back my color icons, box ticked or not ticked, even after restarts. Just looks like Phil's above. Unticking the box, with or without restarting does not help. The three Personas at the left are in color; just the tool icons are monochromatic.
  9. My original question concerned the creation of a classic text outline of a long, complex document automatically, using the headings I designate. Text styled in Heading 1 (Topic I) Text styled in Heading 2 (Subtopic A.) Text styled in Heading 2 (Subtopic B) Text styled in Heading 3 (Sub-Subtopic 1) Text styled in Heading 3 (Sub-Subtopic 2) Text styled in Heading 2 (Subtopic C) etc., This helps to keep a long document in a logical or reasonable order, especially when you have to research and/or create
  10. Thank you Walt, for your precise instructions. I think you have opened the door for how this works. I appreciate your help so much. Elegant.
  11. I have a long text document in linked text frames. I have added figures I want to number and caption and be able to list in a Table/List of Figures. I want to group the captions with the Figures, and wrap the original continuous text around these groups of (figure(s) + caption(s). Attempts to add a Text box or frame for the caption breaks the continuous text, adding the caption content to the original text. How do I achieve my desired result? I guess I mean a box of editable unrelated text within existing text, that will travel with (or be grouped with) its image, not the original text.
  12. Thanks jmwellborn. I had discovered the lighter version(s), and do find it easier to navigate while I am learning.
  13. Thank you Aammppaa and Old Bruce. Sounds as though it will suit my needs well. I appreciate your replies, as some of the discussion in the forum gave me doubts. It is what I had hoped it would be, and I am enjoying my exploration.
  14. I come from a background in layout and illustration of college science textbooks, before Desktop Publishing existed. I have never used InDesign, Quark, etc., so discussions of their features, terminology, or usages do not mean much to me, nor do I have much idea how my needs might be met by a DTP. Most seem to be overpriced or over-featured for my list of basic wishes. I am hoping that AfPub is trying to be the so-far-missing program between a user like myself and the expensive world of InDesign. My basic needs are listed below. Will I be able to meet them with AfPub when it is fully rel
  15. Newbie question: Can I create dynamic Headers and Footers for a master page spread? I can see how to place fixed content and dynamic page numbers, but not how to create running headers/footers that include automatically updated fields based on current contents of Heading 1, Heading 2, etc.
  16. Thanks, Robinp. Folders could do it. They will certainly be a help.
  17. As a newbie I am confused by this. I understand a “based-on “ group, but I would like the possibility for a group or folder to have a set of styles for one document or document portion. I want to locate and use them easily, without searching them out in a long list of everything. The long list of all styles is just confusing. Interested in the way to create a set of personally created styles for a particular use. That is, “Mary's stuff” for a shared computer, or my “long book” as opposed to a subset for “magazine article” or “poetry book” or “newsletter,” as well as the separate uses within a
  18. Wondering about a procedure for adding captions in an illustrated text piece (not a brochure). Text presumably to be created by linked text frames in a facing-pages document. It is a continued, relatively long story. I want to add a number of captioned illustrations laid out within this text. How do I add captions, some of which might be lengthy? In separate text frames? Does this break the original text frame linkages? Can a caption be grouped or linked with the image so that when or if the image is moved, the caption goes with it? I want to use a different text style to differentiate c
  19. Thank you, thank you, danke, A_B_C and R C-R, for your answers. Now I understand what has been going on, and how to control my work. I never wanted to "Convert" in the first place, and and the selection of the shape was my downfall. As I didn't know what was happening to my shape, I had no idea how to frame my question. I will pay more attention to the bottom status bar now as well. I did note the layer issue at the right, and the change in Text tool shape, but didn't know what I had done to cause it. You have helped me enormously.
  20. Thanks again Alex and MEB. I am now more confused than ever. However, I believe I have found a clue for you to help me. Your sample "button text" above is exactly what I want (Not really a button, but the effect is the same.) I fired up a new document to test it. Step 1: Created a shape. Step 2: Filled shape with color. Step 3: Select Text Tool at left; chose Frame Text Tool: clicked in Shape to start my text entering. Result: the entire shape turned white. I could enter text, but colored shape was gone. In the layers list at right, the shape was gone,
  21. Thanks for the suggestion, ABC, but I don't think so. I kept playing with it and exploring after I posted the above. I got into trouble again, and believe I triggered the “convert to text box” menu item while the shape and the text tool were selected. The shape immediately disappeared under the white text box, just what I remember from yesterday. Now I do not know how to turn off that “convert” selection when I create other shapes and try to put text in them. The text box is now always white again. How do I turn off the “convert to text box” control? I gave up a few minutes ago.....
  22. Thanks MEB. I thought I had been trying this for several days with no success. Today, I tried again and it worked as I had expected and hoped! I have no idea what is different! The past few days, I would build my shapes, style them with stroke and color fills and so forth. Then the text box I created on the layer above showed my text within a solid white text box, mostly blotting out the my colored, styled shapes. I am not sure what is different today where my "text box background" is now transparent (showing the shape color inside the box as desired) as opposed to the ubiq
