The lighting properties in Affinity give the same flexibility as a curve but hopefully should be easier to understand.

Thanks for the Photoline files. I was seeing similar or sometimes worse artefacts in Photoline but now I know you resize a larger version to hide the artefacts then it makes more sense.

We will continue to improve the layer effects in Affinity but all apps seem to show issues at the extremes of their bevels.

"but all apps seem to show issues at the extremes of their bevels."

    Not this one:

  2. I recently purchased Extensis Fusion 8.

While I had a conversation with the helpdesk I asked about support for the Affinity line of software.

    I had some positive response:

The helpdesk employee will certainly pass it on to the software engeneers so they can assess if it's possible to integrate font auto activation on a document level.

Like the plug-ins for the Adobe suite of software.

So, in future it might be that Extensis might have tighter integration for the Affinity line of software.

For the time being, there is another option to activate fonts automatically in the Affinity line of software by using :

    new application set.

My guess: the 3 icons are the personas. The first one is Publisher, where you can do all the stuff for layout (which is active in this demo), the second is designer, where you can do all vector stuff, and the third is Photo, where the pixel stuff is integrated. So you can do all the things in Publisher without the need to switch programs. I guess, you must have bought Designer and Photo to work this way, Otherwise you can only import pictures.

The Export persona (and others) are simply missing in this preview and come in a later version.

@MattP: can you take pleasure in my theory? ;)

    I had the same thought.

Would be awesome, to do everything in one UI and don't have to swith...

Since we are all talking about new software, I have a serious question I would like to ask. Maybe something like this already exists, but I would love to hear what, if any, Affinity Products (or Affinity Compatible Applications) are in the works for organizing files and digital assets (along the lines of Adobe Bridge)?

Yes, a DAM tool is in the works.

Yes, working with tabs in AD is incredibly awkward and counter-intuitive. It's so time-consuming, I'm giving up. Even using separate columns of text instead of tabs is better. I wonder if you will consider adding a ruler like most sensible applications out there, since this is quite an obvious implementation (but it's not on your roadmap).

Since a couple of years tabs are hardly used anymore but most people use tables instead, removing the lines and you're done, often quicker and easier then tabs.

But i would welcome such a feature.

I just want to bring this post back to the top and dwell on it for a little while... You know I can't help but say a little too much most of the time, but I've been told in no uncertain terms that I'm not allowed to confirm or deny the function of these buttons... So I was trying to think what I could say about the subject, so: They're not there by accident. They're not placeholders. They're awesomeNobody else offers this, nor could they.

So my question to you is: What do you think they do? :D

I think they are some kind of personas for specialized work or links to the Designer and Photo apps to directly modify an element in Publisher.

But then again, I could be wrong. We'll see this summer.

Was it just me or at the beginning of the video, didn't it look like there were three personas? But the two Personas to the right of Publisher, those look like the icons for Designer and Photo, no?

So, are we literally going to have access to ALL of the features and functions of both Designer and Photo within Publisher?

I guess/suspect the same integration as Photoshop, Illustrator and Indesign have...

Usually this only happens once...then the person has learned to package if moving a publication and/or to keep publication resources in a relative path beneath the publication path and move/copy the whole shebang. Q is the same as ID. As is PagePlus, Viva Designer, or any other layout/design application that can link resources instead of just embedding them. The same will apply to APub and, if linked resources make it to AD, then to it too.

There are plug-ins/XTensions for ID/Q that can assist in relinking missing resources or using it to move/gather assets and relink the publication to them. And they work great. But APub/AD as of yet doesn't have hooks for plug-in developers to build widgets for them so I think we'll be stuck using what appeared in the video to be an asset panel. Which is akin to ID's & Q's libraries. And I don't use them, either.

In Indesign there is an option to package everything necesary for the file/publication. If people fail to do so and something is missing, that is NOT the fault of the software. Preflight is there!

I've never used Quark so I don't know how it handles this, but how many times have InDesign users experience missing fonts and other program errors because they didn't embed their links or package their file? These are very easy things to miss first time on the go. And so, I am curious to know what Affinity's approach will be to keep everything linked together without errors popping up.

you have preflight for that, to check if everything is included for the document. I would certainly think Publisher would have such a tool to test if all elements were there.

So another half year longer wait? This is far beyond ridiculous now... We were promised the beta 3 years ago so this is a whopping 3,5 years late - IF it comes in summer.

Better wait and have a decent tool then publish too soon and everybody is complaining about it's lack of features or stability!

There is always something to be desired! You gotta have a starting point and I for one are very pleased with a date...So we can target summer for the beta.

Very impressed! Lots of good stuff in the preview.

    I have some questions though:

will it be possible to begin typing anywhere on the canvas or do you need to place a text box/container.

Will it support all types of fonts? Like TTF, Opentype and Type 1 fonts?

Can you correct errors in a table by dragging them left to right and up and down? So you can put the tables in the correct order?

I would love to hear from management or the developers on this

Will Affinity Publisher be able to publish web sites? I was told "no" on your Facebook channel but there seems to be confliction information posted on this thread

I am not looking for details and will probably hold all questions, but will Publisher replace  or supercede WebPlus?  Or will I need to start looking for another web publishing program?

    Thanks in advance

Adobe has another tool for that called Dreamweaver or if you wish flash pro. But flash is being substituted with fully html 5 applications.

  13. It is apparent that they are silent on this issue of unfairness at this point to their customer base who was promised special upgrading price for loyal customers. Yes internal communications still plague them. New software is one thing but same old broken promises and communications issues has not changed it would seem kind of like bait and switch. If they don't want to provide special pricing for their loyal base then maybe a suggestion: All Previous owners of DPlus X6/X8, WP X*, PhotoPX8, PageP X9, and Affinity Mac users get free upgrade to v2.0 when it is released and Affinity Photo to 2.0 as well. Just a suggestion. Granted it would seem that it was done out of convenience not fairness. To have to go and create a system to provide a separate discount for previous owners whose data is on another system because they created a whole new accounting system where you have to start a new user account would seem to make sense and did not want to spend the time on it let alone import customer data and history. Don't make false promises and alienate your base, That's why Hillary lost :) DOH. You can have great new software but not showing loyalty or keeping promises to your customer base who was loyal to you can put a stain on anything NEW. I would suggest you have a meeting on this with your boss on how you screwed up and misunderstand the meaning of fair and loyalty.

All that whining over $40. Try updates from Adobe in the past or other software where updates are way more expensive.

For $40 you get a great basic vector program wich will improve in time and I am sure upgrades in future won't cost an arm and a legg either.

For that price, Serif can draw in more new users. The more users they get, the more money they can spend on research and development, wich means faster bug fixes and new implementations of features.

Congrats gentlemen on launching Windows Affinity designer. Thus far I really like it. I am a new Serif user.

I am looking for the trinity(Designer, Photo and Publisher) so I can ditch the Adobe bandwagon. I am not feeling much for being held hostage all my life.

I am still using creative suite 6, but as I am more comfortable with the Affinity products I will more and more shift to the Affinity products. I am quite sure as the software will develop even more, we will have all the features Adobe has and more.

I am Sorry, but i really can't complain about the €40 cost, cosidered what the competition must have for updates, or even Photoshop plug-ins, costing a multitude of the price for designer.

If Serif can draw more people in to buy the Affinity software, it's better for them and better for us as well.

  14. Re: Broken issues - the font family dropdown has been very slow since the first beta release.

The problem I think is the time taken to calculate all the font previews, for a number of reasons:

    1. I have 4000+ font files on my system, many of which are complex fonts with a lot of vector paths.

    2. If I change the "All" dropdown to "Recent" or "monospaced" the font name dropdown populates much more quickly, though there is still a slight lag.

Are the font previews cached or recalculated on each session?

If you have 4000 fonts in your Windows font folder then it will eat up quite a lot of RAM and slow down things considerably. Better use a tool like Extensis Fusion to activate just the fonts that you need during a job. It has also auto-activation of the fonts used in certain Adobe applications.

Never a good thing to have so much fonts in the Windows font folder!

  15. No biggie. I can do my vector traces in Photoline, Inkscape, and (the newly open sourced) OpenToonz. OpenToonz actually does a very good job: although it might seem a bit overkill to use Studio Ghibli's animation production tool to trace artwork :-P

What is quite unique about OpenToonz is that it can output the single paths as well as the full outlined trace. This allows me to change the drawing intent of the paths easily in illustration software, which is pretty neat.

Do you use Opentoonz for this or GTS?

    It seems it's a seperate scan/trace program.

  16. What would be helpful is if people post images of what they would like to trace and a result of what the currently expect the output to look like.

Then, when we come around to writing a trace feature we will know the users expectations.

I would love to see an auto trace function like Vector Magic in Affinity Designer. It would be a killer selling point if you get the tracing engine up to that level. I would be happy to pay for it in a version 2.0 of Affinity Designer.

The tracing abilities in Illustrator aren't up to notch as well.

  17. On my PC with German keyboad and Windows 10 the installer for Affinity automatically installs Affinito Photo for Windows in the German Language.

I only have this PC because I am used to german Keyboards due to my job.

Is there a way to change the language used  to English (or Dutch) after the installation of  Affinity Photo Windows ?

    Hi,

    yes there is:

    go to edit->preferences->General.

If you clicked on general you'll find a language selector at the bottom of the screen.
