I second the motion that we get the ability to change colors of rulers, margins, etc.

At least 2 different photos.

Dragonfly image: the .jpg original is 8.41 MB, 4288x2848.
- The afphoto version is 19,222 KB.

Honeybee image: original .jpg is 2000x3000px, 1,349KB.
- The .afphoto version is 4,555KB. I would have been working in it to refine the selection.
I'd upload the photos, but it seems the paperclip icon below has the word "Loading..." after it, and it's not accepting any uploads.
Further info: Task Manager shows the power usage is around 15% while this is happening. I don't remember the CPU use.

Thanks, Guys! You have been very informative.
On not using the "subset fonts" option in the export to PDF -- wow. The half-sheet version goes from 70kb to 1,246 kb! That's 17.8 times as large! Ouch!
Maybe I can use a PNG picture of a checkbox, and manually place it.
But Affinity really does need to fix this!

RC-R: Thanks, but I'm on Windows 10, current version, being auto-updated. So it's not just a problem on MACs. In my computer, it's not showing the bullets in the very program that MADE the PDF, from the .afpub doc itself.
If I open the .pdf and look at the non-bulleted items, the text styles have been not copied into this document. If I import them and reapply the style, the bullets show up. Then, since it's now back in .afpub format, I re-export it to .pdf, and the .pdf has no bullets. There seems to be no way I can get the bullets to show up in the program that created the .pdf, BUT some other programs DO show them.
I tell ya, I'm thinking of springing for something that doesn't have as many problems, although I hate to not support Serif.

Thank you all!
The PDF viewer that doesn't show the boxes is Affinity Publisher itself. But thanks for the suggestion to try a different PDF viewer. It looks OK in Firefox! Why can't Publisher show me what's there??
I cold-rebooted and restarted Publisher. Still doesn't show the bullet boxes in a PDF created by Publisher from Publisher's own .afpub document.

I cold-rebooted and restarted Publisher. Still doesn't show the bullet boxes in a PDF created by Publisher from Publisher's own .afpub document. So it looks like other people will be able to see the doc correctly, but I can't, in the program that created it.
I will try reinstalling Publisher.

I have made a text style that creates a Wingdings check box at the start of "Bulleted list". I add a tab after the bullet (too lazy to make it add its own tab in the stylesheet). It's fine until I export to PDF. The bullet boxes disappear. Is there a work-around?

This has happened to me several times in the last few days. I can not group objects. Whenever I try to lasso them and use Control/G, the text sizes grow perhaps 8x to 10x larger, and destroy the layout.
Also, I have "Show margins" checked, and they don't show. I tried unselecting it and reselecting it, in the View tab. No help.
I'm on Windows 10 x64, 19041.04.

I'm using Publisher, the newest version that I just installed, and it does not put an outline around a rectangle, but when I use the "fx" outline, it makes the "outline" a solid fill in the whole box. (at least, on screen - I haven't tried printing yet). Am I doing something wrong?
The images below show:(Left image) the solid color on the rectangle is supposed to be an OUTLINE, not a fill.
(Right image) the settings.Help!

I set the Document Units in a New Document and it sticks for all subsequent New Documents I make. I am using Mac OS 10.14.6 (Mojave). If you have a document which is set to points go to the Document Setup from the File > Document Setup... and set it there then save the file and it will open in inches. Now I have to go back and reset mine to picas.
Thanks much, Bruce, but I'm in Windows 10 x64, and that doesn't seem to work for me. I've had to re-configure it as "inches" SO many times tonight, when it's the same document I already saved with "inches"!
-
I've gotta rant:
I am REALLY hoping that Serif makes it possible to SAVE one's choice of measurement units with the Publisher document, and that it will NOT be overridden by points EVERY time I save and reopen the document, or export to PDF and open that! This is happening in Publisher 1.7.3.481 (Sorry, I'm an American, and I've grown up thinking in inches. I understand DPI, or PPI, but not points or picas. I often produce PDF files, and those measurement units aren't what I need.
Please.

This has driven me nuts, too! But thanks to the comments above, I tried embedding the whole Calibri font, and the weird characters have disappeared. But that vastly bulks up the file size!
This document came to me as a .docx,
which I am to post on a website as a .pdf.So I took it from my Word 365 to .pdf,
took that into Publisher, removed some lines that identified the author,
and exported to .pdf.I believe this is the only one of 6 documents (only 2 were originally Word docs instead of .pdf) to have this problem. It sounds like if it were in another original font, the problem might not happen.
The specific letter combinations that turned into something else are ft, ti, tt. I can't easily reproduce what they turned into, since I deleted the offending document copies.
Please, fix this.

I just made up an ad (in Designer) for publishing in print, and my husband suggested that we need to see how it would look to a colorblind reader. It would be VERY helpful to have that in all the Affinity products!
I do have ColorSchemer Studio, which does have the function of showing how your chosen colors would look to someone with different kinds of color vision problems. But I can't load my ad into it and see how the gradients would look, for instance. Maybe someone has such a program, and I'll go looking for one. But it would sure be great if I could check it within Affinity programs! Maybe you could find a developer who's doing this and pay him to incorporate his product into the global Affinity program.

The important words from @fde101 were "should be", in the sense of "that function should exist, but it doesn't".
Well, I , there is a Zoom "to selection" that will enlarge the selected item to fill the width. That helps. I hope they take the hint and make us able to configure the Special Characters, soon!

This should be configurable in preferences.
That would be great, but I don't find such a configuration. Does anyone know how to configure Special Characters so they're no longer an eye test?

Yikes, I can barely see the SPECIAL CHARACTERS. They are so DIM. A nice Dark Colour and shown in BOLD would be good.
I notice that, too. Maybe they made the special characters very small to avoid distorting the view of the layout. But wecould use more contrast in the characters.

We are only responsible for native file thumbnails (afdesign, afphoto, afpub) if the "Save thumbnail with documents" is enabled in General Preferences. Other than that, we cannot help read thumbnails of other files.
It sounds like I'll need to use another program to get needed thumbnails for PDFs, if even that would work. Not having thumbnails is not a good thing.
-
I'm using Publisher Windows 399, and have yet to see it make a thumbnail for a PDF, that's visible in Windows file lists. Am I missing something?

Thank you! I've been searching off and on all day with little useful help. So frustrating. Now I need to see if I can find what you found. Is this for something newer than .384 for Windows? Maybe I should just wait until tomorrow for the full release. Ugh
Sorry I didn't see your post sooner!
IF it still works after release on June 19, it was here: https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/forum/58-report-bugs-in-publisher-beta-on-windows/
I found it by clicking the "breadcrumb" at the top of the page for the Mac download; the "crumb" that was for forums for publisher.
In that page was a link "Report bugs in Publisher beta on Windows".
Inside that page was "Affinity Publisher Public Beta - 1.7.1.399 (GM Preview)"

I pointed to it in my earlier response.
Thanks, Walt, but you pointed to the Mac version.
I found the Windows version here: https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/forum/58-report-bugs-in-publisher-beta-on-windows/
I'm not sure it will still work on 6/19/2019, when the product will be released.
Publisher is crashing often, version 1.10.5.1342
in V1 Bugs found on Windows
Posted
Several problems have come in the last few days. I'll mention all in case this helps diagnose:
1. I have been going back and forth between Publisher and Photo, so this may have something to do with it/them crashing several times in the last 3 days (or so). Anyone else have this happening?
2. I was trying to export from Publisher to a .jpg and it messaged me that that file format is not supported!
3. May not be related, but also today found when I used the pen to create a text box, the outline of the confining line was printing! I can't make it disappear!
4. This may well be unrelated, but I created an image including an area with a fully transparent background, and when it was exported to .jpg, the background showed up as very light yellow. When I printed it letting the printer manage the color, the problem went away.
