  1. Disheartening to hear separated mode is out. Being able to freely position a bunch of images and stack or work across them is something I've been able to since I started all the way back on ... Photoshop 3.0 IRIX. 😜 These tabbed views on the other hand are the first thing I tend to get rid off in paint programs. Too rigid and fickle with the document snapping - especially on an ultra widescreen monitor.

  2. I'm assuming this has been mentioned before elsewhere but considering how active the Affinity devs used to be in these forums and how frequently betas were being posted these last six months have felt surreal. I searched for announcements, anything explaining the sudden stealth mode, checked out people's linkedin, twitter, glassdoor just to see if they were even still working there. Last thing I'd want is to see Designer and Photo turn into abandonware.

Was there any announcement regarding the policy shift? Of course its understandable that there's no need for betas and frequent updates if some whole new version is in the works and not in a state where you'd want the public to get their hands on it. Would be nice to know that this is what's actually going on.

Also this goes without saying - one of the big reasons to go with Affinity is the lack of forced subscriptions. The trend in the industry towards this is as undeniable as the outlook is grim though. Fingers crossed that for Affinity things stay like they are now in future releases - that includes a Mac version that is not bound to the app store. No pressure... 😇

  3. ImageReady! Talk about a blast from the past. :)

GIF anim handling/timeline and ability to tween between layers would be a great feature for Affinity.

I use animated GIFs quite a bit to demonstrate my progress and mockup client requests to let them decide if what they're asking for is actually what they're after. Would love to be able to do this directly inside AP and possibly even AD. So far it requires a trip to Adobeland to pull it off.

Are you absolutely sure you aren't accidentally hitting the Straighten button when clicking between all the opened images? There's barely any space between the Straighten button and the document tab.

Is there any chance you could provide a screen recording at all?

I'm absolutely certain that I never accidentally touch the Straighten button in the context bar (or whatever it may be called officially :))

I'll look into doing a screen recording but to demonstrate let me quickly post my screen layout when using AP:

    tmp.thumb.jpg.a08bd9a0051de134b4e75c597924ba34.jpg

Once the image has been loaded and is the active document all I do is to click on the crop icon in the toolbox, then set my crop as desired by dragging over the image and finally press the Enter key to confirm. Next step is to press CMD+S followed by CMD+W to overwrite the original file with the cropped version and close it right afterwards. I never even get remotely near the context bar or even the menu bar for that matter.

Unless there's some shortcut I'm triggering that I don't know about it can't be that. I've been through the preferences and I don't think there is one for Straighten at all?

  5. I regularly have to crop a whole batch of images manually, and I've had this issue for many versions now and am unsure if it's user error or a bug:

    • Image is opened in Affinity Photo, usually by 'Open with' context menu from an image viewer (XNview in my case) or by dragging in from Finder - I usually have between 20 and 50 images open at the same time
    • Make an image the active document
    • Pick the Crop tool and proceed to crop the image

Every so often the crop tool will not open up in crop mode but right away in straighten mode with the ruler icon visible. This happens to me perhaps once in about 30+ images (across sessions and across restarts of application or OS).

I don't seem to do anything different to toggle this behaviour and I can't find a hotkey assignment or the like that might be triggering this.

    OS is Mojave.

  6. Oh I think its just Apple that is to blame here. Whatever happened there internally, you could see they tried to bury it a few short years after its release. If you want overpriced, try the current Mac Pro. ;) The Trashcan was a fast machine when it released, especially considering its size and power consumption. Still very useable in my opinion, especially when no high end 3D graphics are required.

It's going to be my last Mac too from the looks of it.

Anyway, I would recommend trying the SSD route just to confirm if you have a hard- or a software problem.

  7. Hmmm.. how about you get yourself an external SSD, install - say - 10.13 on it, boot from that and see if Affinity then works? The MP is surely not high on Apple's priority list. Would not be surprised if they did not test their new code on Trashcan much and just wished for it to go away and be forgotten. 😜

....if successful you may still return the SSD. 😇

Runs fine for me on 10.14 btw. . Not going to upgrade anymore since I want to keep a 32 bits application.

  8. Hardware issue leading to applications not starting - but the operating system itself boots and works? Sounds a bit strange to me.

Have you combed the log files in 'Console' for critical errors, crash reports, watched the message feed in the log window while launching affected applications? If you can't spot anything wrong I'd recommend going through all the applications and checking which ones run, perhaps there's a pattern to be found? (GPU acceleration/Metal or the like?)

  9. I agree there are some areas where Affinity is a little unintuitive - some of these I unfortunately get to use rather often and it's not an issue with lack of familiarity anymore. I admit some of it has to do with two decades of Adobe experience and muscle memory though.

Mainly just wanted to say: don't screw with the update process! :D Software that doesn't auto-update nor tries to run a zillion update watcher and cloud-BS processes, nor pops up notifications and whatnot and (important on the Mac) neither requires the user to run latest&greatest OS all the time - it's software heaven to me. No subscriptions either. This part has to stay, no compromises! :)

  10. I'm sure you're aware that this is not a good idea to shop around for any recently released GPUs (thanks to episode 2 of the Bitcoin craze).

I'm guessing like most software Affinity on Windows is primarily being developed/tested with Nvidia GPUs. One of the 3xxx-series GPUs therefore should make for a good fit. I don't think you need to go with the high end either for this particular application. But if the current street prices for the 3080 don't deter you - that's surely a top contender.

Previous generation 2xxx series Nvidia cards will be equally useful - you could even go with a second hand one if you can't find anything new at reasonable prices. RTX 2070 and upwards would be my recommendation.

If the whole app is contained within a frame, then it's not what most of us are asking for here. Ever since MultiFinder appeared on the Mac in 1987, the whole point was that you could run multiple apps side by side and see both windows at the same time. With further improvements over the years came things like drag and drop between apps. You lose some of those benefits when an app takes up the whole screen, so you know… some of us old-timers still prefer the old multi-window approach. If seeing your desktop is a distraction, maybe you just need to clean it up…? 😉

Well with an application frame such as the ones Adobe is using (or every app set up like that under the sun, really) you can scale the app to easily fit other windows around it. I don't see the benefit of having the desktop peek through during color critical work - and worse - having the app interface vanish if you happen to click outside a document window by mistake. That is a usability sin IMO.

I'm old timer enough to have experienced Photoshop 3 on the SGI which also had this floaty interface. 24 years on I do recall how annoying I found using that.

Main point for me though are documents opening half obscured by the interface and the need to resize/zoom documents within the document borders all the time.

  12. Yeah I agree with the OP's thoughts about the separated mode. I use it all day (tabbed interfaces just feel so restrictive) and the daily annoyances in window management are real.

I'd also like to see an application frame for separated mode making its debut to block out the desktop background. Using a neutral/dark wallpaper only helps so much I'm afraid.

  13. Phew, well assuming you are using an Intuos Pro or Cintiq (I am not familiar with their other product lines and driver software - if different) then you will be able to configure application-specific profiles and assign keyboard shortcuts to pen and tablet-buttons. A quick test on my end reveals that it's not possible to assign modifier key+mouseclick combinations this way.

Therefore I think a way to do it might be to use a freeware app called Karabiner that among other things lets you create shortcuts and macros including mouse buttons, map your desired combination onto a keyboard shortcut and assign that in the Wacom prefs. I imagine something like mapping CTRL + ALT + RMOUSE to a button and holding that down while putting the pen down on the tablet, thus invoking LMOUSE should do the trick?

I should point out I haven't tested this myself nor do I use that AP shortcut personally.

Oh and: I was referring to the Mac version. If you are asking about Windows there might be other tools - like Autohotkey - to look into to achieve the same thing.
