  1. I'm saving a lot of images from Google Image Search and finding they're AVIF, and I can't open them in Affinity Photo 2. Meanwhile, Adobe has integrated generative AI that can do all kinds of mad wizardry to create mind-blowing images just by typing text.

It's time for Serif to stop slacking off and catch up before that quiet sucking sound becomes a full-blown vacuum of losing all its users back to Adobe.

Hey there I thought I had added an update here but apparently not. I found that if I closed down the hundreds of fonts that I don’t use the issue was resolved. I hope this helps for you too

    This solved my problem.

Can someone explain why this is a problem with AppStore versions and not direct installed versions from Serif? It looks like if you have more than 2000 fonts it causes the problem.

@RB DESIGN Have you checked to see how many fonts are currently active on your system as @Brad Studio suggests as this can be due to Apple's sandboxing?

Which store did you purchase the apps from?

    Hi Lee,

I had around 4,200 fonts active, it seemed when I dropped below 2,200 everything started working again.

HOWEVER, the other night I activated a new font and wouldn't appear in Designer not matter what I would do on my Mac Mini M1, but it would work in Publisher, which was purchased directly from Serif. I'm almost at the point of asking for a refund from the AppStore and buying the other two apps directly, which would solve these problems caused by Apple's restraints.

  4. When you have more than 2,000 fonts activate, Affinity Designer & Photo will not save or open files. I currently had 4,400 fonts activated and de-activated the Google Font library going down to 1024 fonts, resolved the issue. Oddly, Affinity Publisher did not suffer this problem, however Publisher was not from the App Store, but direct purchase.

The application needs to be improved to handle more fonts and provide better warnings regarding limits and other font related problems.

  5. Affinity Photo & Designer 1.8.3 (App Store installed)

    macOS Mojave 10.14.6

On my MBP either program was unable to open any editable file from anywhere on the file system nor could it save a new file that was created, resulting in a warning of "Permission Denied."

However, on my Mac Pro, everything worked just fine. After some research someone said it was related to the number of fonts installed on the system. I confirmed this case by reducing the number of fonts to match my Mac Pro on my MBP.

MBP had 2,800 fonts and the MP had 2,300 enabled.

Also, an interesting side note, Publisher which I've purchase direct instead of the App Store had no problems with 2,800 fonts.

No other program is affected by the number of fonts enabled, this bug should be fixed.
