  1. Hi Lee Thanks for your reply. That's a bit unfortunate, of course I can maintain two files but that's a lot of trouble and a sure way to maintain errors in both. Best regards
  2. Hello, I'm creating a booklet-style document which print version has facing pages. It thus have 3 master pages (one per section) that are "facing" pages. Document has maybe 30 pages in total. Now I also want to produce a downloable PDF version of that document and to make it properly readable on screen or on a phone, that version should be single pages only. This implies using a different set of master pages for the same content: on the print version , there are some decoration graphics spanning over 2 facing pages while on the web version those graphics should be contained on each single page. Now the question is: how do best handle having 2 sets of master pages for the same content? Starting from the "facing pages" version, with facing pages masters, I tried setting "Facing" to No in document setup but that resulted in breaking the "facing" masters as well and so I cannot switch back from "single" to "facing". Aside from just maintaining 2 copies of the same document and making sure I make any changes to both versions, is there an smart way of doing this? Many thanks
  3. Hi @s.auler I can confirm this works fine. I have added Affinity Publisher to the mix since then and its assets and settings are stored in the same location as Affinity Designer due to the junction on the "Affinity" folder. It does allow me switching transparently from desktop to laptop with both software with all settings and assets always being there. @haakoo That's a workaround but this does not preserve settings, recent files, Studio configuration (which panels to show/hide) etc. Using a set path for Affinity storage, one can move around from computer to computer without interruption in the workflow. Hope the ability to set a storage path will be added in the future but junctions/symlink is the next best thing at the moment I think. Cheers
  4. You're right, sorry for the confusion. I guess I'll then leave it to @MEB then
  5. Thanks for the discussion! Still feel what can probably be considered industry-standard mouse-selection-direction toggle would be beneficial to AD both in usability and to facilitate Illustrator users onboarding. I'll leave it with you guys now and instead go and buy Affinity Publisher Cheers
  6. 1 - I still need the clarification about why there is "competition" on modifiers key for selection when dragging the mouse around objects while I only know about modifiers for clicks, not dragging the mouse. 2 - The Help file correction was in reference to the fact I previously stated that help file and video tuts did not mention the right-click workaround while in fact I was wrong and the Help file does mention it Cheers
  7. Also, let me revert my previous comment about the Right-click button trick not being in the help file. It is actually there, I just did not see it! It's not in the video tutorial on selecting objects though. Cheers
  8. Hi @Alfred Can you clarify something though: I am aware of the usual modifiers for mouse clicks such as Ctrl/Cmd-clicks to select/deselect individual objects or Shift-click to select/deselect a range of object but I am not aware of any mouse gesture modifiers such as Ctrl-drag or Shift-drag. Are there any? Is there a place I could go to and see the list of shortcuts and modifiers that AD actually has? NB: Just found out that Corel Draw uses the Alt key modifier to toggle between full/partial selection. Still this requires reaching out for the keyboard instead of just using the mouse as in Illustrator/Krita and probably others Best regards
  9. @MEB I'm a developer myself so I know that all too well (although we've never produced an actual printed user manual ). Actually, the left/right toggle could have 2 more arguments going for it (promise, I'll stop there!): - help file and video tutorials do not mention your right-click modifier (I searched for that information) so most people would actually think this is simply not possible - which is bad - people coming from Illustrator (you know, that subscription software...) would be able to just use it, one learning curve step less I think you don't have to remove or change the current behavior. Just add the mouse selection gesture on top of existing method. Again, the modifiers are not documented anyway so not sure many people use them. The Ctrl-drag on Mac is easy to get by but the mouse right-click on windows, few will stumble upon, me think. Hope you can consider this anyway, I'll do with the right-click workaround. Cheers
  10. Hi @MEB Which would then make the case for getting rid of modifiers for this particular use case: - same selection method on all platforms - free one modifier for any other use - arguably easier to use than a modifier as selection mode can be toggled without the need of anything else but the mouse. Certainly easier to use than the right-click modifier on windows. Cheers
  11. Hi @MEB Thanks, this works and I checked it also works the other way around, when Select object when intersects with selection marquee is disabled. This is actually a bit cumbersome to do to be honest Any reason to not use a simple keyboard modifier or use the same convention as Illustrator, Krita, etc? Can either solution be implemented? that way you could get rid of the "Select object when intersects with selection marquee" setting entirely. I assume the CTRL modifier on Mac is because there's no right button there. Keeping the same solution on both systems would make sense. And actually switching selection mode based on selection direction could be used on all systems, regardless of mouse type (Mac/windows) or lack of mouse (IPad). Cheers
  12. Hi, Thanks for your reply. I am on Windows and I am afraid trying to select with both buttons does not perform partial object selection (that actually does not select anything). Just in case, I also tried to select objects with CTRL, ALT, SHIFT and their combinations but they do not do anything either for partial object selection when "Select object when intersects with selection marquee" is disabled in AD Preferences. I also tried enabling "Select object when intersects with selection marquee" and using either CTRL, SHIFT or ALT, or selecting with both mouse buttons but that does not toggle the selection operation mode either.
  13. Hi, Been using Designer for a few days now and really happy with my purchase. One thing that bugs me is the that one can select entirely selected objects or partially selected objects but switching from one mode to the other requires changing a setting in configuration. Could it be considered what Illustrator (have not used in years but I think I remember it does) and others are doing which is to: - select only entirely selected objects when selection is performed from left to right - select fully selected and partially selected objects when selection is performed from right to left. Attaching a small screen capture to illustrate how it works. I have found it to be very convenient and fast when selecting multiple objects in more complex designs. I have searched this forum a lot thinking it might already be possible, to no avail. Please let me know if I just missed it. Cheers krita-partial-full-select.mp4
  14. Hi I assume R CR means that if it becomes known that assets can be used across a network for instance, by the 25 people in a company without corresponding licensing, then some assets suppliers could lose faith in Affinity and pull their products from Affinity. I would argue that whether we do it or not, it's always been possible as part of all operating systems Affinity products operate on. So those suppliers knew from the get go that Affinity is NOT enforcing any kind of license control outside of Affinity products own and their products could be shared. In other words, if any such supplier requires a licensing scheme more restrictive than the Affinity one, they know that license compliance relies on the user. It is and was very clear from the start that no assets licensing was enforced by Affinity. Is this a theoretical discussion or are there assets suppliers with licensing requirements more stringent than the Affinity ones?
  15. Hi all, Happy to find this thread! As a new user I also tried to find the configuration option where I could set the Settings and assets folder but could not. Now I know it does not exist My use case is the same, I switch often from laptop to desktop and all settings and assets are lost. The ability to set a folder would solve many issues as I'd then be able to store all of that on my external SSD disk which holds of my data and is hooked up either to the laptop or the desktop depending on what I'm currently using (windows 10). Indeed by just having the ability to set a settings and/or assets folder for Designer, one can put that data on an external disk, on a onedrive/GDrive/Dropbox folder to sync it, etc I had not thought about the licensing issue for sharing though and this might be an obstacle @R C-R Only the initial sync would take some times, updates are real quick. And as you have the local copy anyway, no internet location is not an issue unless you forgot to sync the folder before leaving. Dropbox/GDrive/OneDrive do that automatically and transparently, unless I'm not understanding what you say. Maybe an issue would be for Designer to adjust to, say, an asset that was modified in the background since the app was launched? Something developers could handle I think. @Aammppaa @s.auler On windows, you can create "Junctions" which are equivalent to symlinks on Linux and Mac. This is what I use on the other app I have that don't let me customize the storage paths. I am happy to report that this seems to work fine with Affinity Designer for assets and configuration. I: - Quit AD - Moved the C:\Users\{{my_user_name}}\AppData\Roaming\Affinity folder to {{my_external_drive}}:\system\data\Affinity - Created a junction from C:\Users\{{my_user_name}}\AppData\Roaming\Affinity to {{my_external_drive}}:\system\data\Affinity - Restarted AD: all config and custom assets were there after restarting. For me the target folder is on my external SSD drive but if it works that way, you can also put the target folder on a Dropbox/GDrive/OneDrive to have it synced between machines. Likewise for a shared network drive. Again, a configurable assets and/or config path would likely be more resilient. Cheers
