The fix is already available for Windows (but not yet for Macs) in the latest 1.7.3.476 beta version, which can be installed & run independently of the retail version. I am a Mac user so I can't test this myself, but I think this means as a temporary workaround Windows users can install the beta, import their .abr brush files into that, export them as .afbrushes files, & import those files into the retail version.
