Hi,

I am a developer. I am looking at a way to extract the thumbnails, that are saved with the documents, if I have enabled that option in the prefs. I can see them in the macOS Finder and QuickView. Is there a way to extract them from self written code? I would be interested in a solution that works on Linux, macOS and Windows.

Furthermore, I tried using ExifTool to extract metadata from the files. But ExifTool doesn't find anything it knows. Is there any metadata stored in the files, e.g. with XMP? If yes, how can I extract it from my code?

I hope this is the right forum for my question. If not, please let me know where I can ask my question.

Welcome to the Serif Affinity forums, xyzzy.

The format of the Affinity files is not documented, and is proprietary to Serif.

For thumbnails:

  • On Windows, you would use the official APIs provided by Windows (and supported by Affinity) to extract the thumbnails.
  • I presume there are similar official Mac APIs to get that data from files, which would be supported by Affinity there, too.
  • There would be no support on Linux, other than trying to read through the file and trying to figure it out.

There is no support as far as I know for extracting the EXIF data that would be contained within the file.

I strongly recommend using the officially supported APIs for functions that have them :)
