I've got this working to a point using the pinning functionality. However, for this to work properly I will still need the 2 column text frame to auto size to the height of the content it contains...image.thumb.png.6b9e263cc051f01234ddfdf449f52545.png

I don't think there's a way to get your two-column frame to autosize automatically. However, you can quickly balance the text and resize the frame to the minimum needed by double-clicking on the bottom center node of the Text Frame once you've entered the text:

As far I understand you are not asking for auto-sizing a text frames height but for auto-moving a text frames distance towards others.

Unfortunately there is no such feature yet to be able to work in background.
Instead you need to use the option "align vertically" in 3 steps each time a frame height changes:

1. unckeck the "Auto Distribute"
2. set a specific distance
3. click the most right button above
