paint brush to remove part of an image

another beginner question: I'm following some of the AP revolution videos & each time it says to use a paintbrush to remove part of an image, I just wind up adding white to the image. I've tried selecting the different layers but I get either the same or no response. This may not be enough info to answer my question but any ideas are appreciated. Thanks.

Sounds like you need to be painting onto a mask layer. 

It help to link to the video and to a time within that video you are working on
