RaananaGamer
I am a new user of the PC version. I decided to start with a simple project - blurring the background of a picture. I followed the YouTube tutorial by Affinity Revolution and tried to do the same with one of my own pictures. However, the selection seemed to be wrong as applying the Gaussian blur affected the whole picture. I downloaded the AR sample and tried to exactly copy the tutorial, but the same thing happened. It doesn't matter whether I use selection and then invert selection or not, the line of marching pixels (ants?) doesn't seem to close along the picture edges. With no closure, there is no real separation. So the problem appears to be with selection. In short, what am I doing wrong? Or is there a bug? I am using the software out-of-the-box and have not changed any default settings.
Staff Lee D Posted April 3, 2019 Staff Share Posted April 3, 2019 Hi RaananaGamer, Welcome to the forums. When you use the Selection Brush Tool are you able to to make a selection around the subject you wish to remain clear? Can you also Refine the selection and end up with a more refined selection and that the Output is set to Selection? To Invert you can also use the Select menu and then Invert Pixel Selection and then apply the Gaussian Blur. When finished don't forget to Deselect. If you still have problems, do a quick screen recording so I can see your workflow.
RaananaGamer
Hi Lee, Thanks for the welcome and the post. I am not sure exactly what you are asking. So, in the hope it's easier to explain visually, I did a fresh screenshot of my attempts to replicate the Affinity Revolution video. I have attached the animated GIF file. It does seem to me that the selection is wrong, but I am lost as to how to fix it. Note that, per the original tutorial, first I did the selection, then refined it, then inverted it. I have tried the same with three of my own pictures, and get the same result: the selection seems to be ignored and everything is blurred. All help gratefully received! carl123
You need to use the menu option Filters > Blur > Gaussian Blur or Layer > New Live Filter Layer > Gaussian Blur Filter Not the Gaussian Blur in the Effects Panel Quote To save time I am currently using an automated AI to reply to some posts on this forum. If any of "my" posts are wrong or appear to be total b*ll*cks they are the ones generated by the AI. If correct they were probably mine.
