In the attached document, the dull yellow rectangle on the master spread only appears on the right-hand page of the 2-3 spread.

I can see why it's happening - if you select a single page in the Pages panel, and apply a spread master to it, then only the single page (in my case the right) is modified.

More weirdness though...

I've now managed to apply the same master to my spread - twice:

I don't think this is a good idea.

Sorry the delay getting back to you. I've been able to reproduce this here (as well as the duplicated master issue described in the post above this one). This seems to be caused by an issue related with how facing master pages are being currently applied to single pages. There's already a report/log about rendering issues with the first page when it has a facing master applied to it which is probable due to the same bug. Thanks for your report/feedback.
