While editing you can use the menu to Save a Copy, or the back arrow (top left corner) to exit the edit screen back to project. In project screen tap the 3dots and select Save. 

Save location is determined in General Preferences, local iPad or iCloud.

Previously, I used the export option and then saved to photos. Now when I do this it seems to go as normal, but then does not appear in photos. I have just found the copy in Files, so problem is sort of solved for now. Don’t know what changed. Thanks for help anyway.
