SimonAM
I am currently trialing Affinity Photo, went to apply a quick mask as described in the tutorial video - but it does not work. Why? Does the trial version have limited functionality? So I open the photo, select Quick Mask from the top icon, a red mask is applied, I select the paint brush tool, set to 100% opacity and flow, click and drag on the photo - but nothing happens. The red overlay is unaffected. I have been through the tutorial several times and I believe I am following it correctly. In the tutorial, the underlying background is revealed through the red overlay under the brush, to create the mask, but this is not working for me. Am I doing something wrong like a missing step or a setting to make? Is the trial version unable to do this? For me this is key functionality i.e. to be able to paint on adjustments, for example as one can in Lightroom (which I am also trialing). If this functionality is disabled in Photo how can i successfully trial it?
v_kyr
Hi, should usually work with the trial versions too. - Did you checked that your brush color is set to white when drawing with the brush on the mask? toltec
There are no restrictions on the trial version. As v_kyr says, make sure you are painting on the mask with white paint. SimonAM
Thanks v_kr and toltec for replying. I have now managed to do it OK. I do like explicit step by step procedures so here is one I have written for this task, for comment: 1. Open photo 2. Click on Quick mask icon on top toolbar (white Square with central black circle) – this will display a red mask over the picture 3. Click on the (red) paint brush tool in left bar 4. On the Colour tab (top right) click on the white circle to make the brush white 5. Brush on image with a brush set to right size, opacity and hardness. This will selectively remove the red mask to display the picture underneath. To remove part of the masked selection, switch the brush colour to black and paint over 6. Click on the background layer in the layers tab – this will display a marquee dotted line around the brushed selection 7. From the Adjustment tab, select the required adjustment e.g. HSL adjust, creating an adjustment layer 8. Make the adjustment on the adjustment dialogue with sliders, etc. This will display the alterations with the mask. Close the dialogue, 9. Select another adjustment type if required as at 8 10. Double click on the adjustment layer picture icon to reopen the adjustment dialogue to amend the settings as required. The complete adjustment layer can be switched on or off via its tick box 11. Save and export the amended image.
