How to Place --> Link as in PS for Mockup?

Recommended Posts

Hi!

I'm new to Affinity Designer, and I have a PSD file I need to use for shoe mockup for my store, and I can't figure out how to place my image into the (mask) layer? Here is a :49 video from the print company showing how to do it for the mockup, but I can't figure out how to do it in AD.

Am I able to do this in AD? or Do I need AP for this?

I look forward to any helpful answer given.

Be well,

Lane

Hi lanew, welcome to the Forum.

Did you try to use the Place option? You can find it in File > Place…

Normally it works for me.

Cheers,

Pedro

Hi Pedro,

Thanks for the welcome! I tried the place option, but it's not working. Here's the video showing how to do it in PS: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2IRV-KElUxY

and here's a video of me trying to do it in Affinity: https://youtu.be/wHz53r6M3yQ

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Be well,

Lane

Hi lanew,

Welcome to Affinity Forums :)

You cannot replicate this in Affinity Photo because this layer is a Photoshop Smart Object which we currently don't support in Affinity Photo (it's rasterised on import), so double clicking on it doesn't do nothing.

What you are actually doing when you select the File ▸ Place command is placing the file you selected as a new (independent) layer in Affinity Photo but it's not related in any way with the layer you were trying to "replace".

We hope to add support for Photoshop Smart objects in a future version.

Hi lanew,

You're welcome.

I should had been more clear but here it goes again.

As MEB said Affinity Photo doesn't support Photoshop Smart Objects (yet) so the layer you mention is not necessary. Normally the smart objects you find in that kind of mockups have a dedicated mask layer with effects, lighting adjustments, etc. What I normally do is use the Place option I mention before to place my design and then place that design/layer inside the mask. I saw your video and I believe the mask is inside the white group layer that is checked. I know it's not the perfect solution but it works for me. Please try it and see if it worked.

I'm sharing some tutorials in my YouTube channel and I have three upcoming videos covering three kinds of mockups. You can subscribe it to be notified as soon as it goes online. The first one will be next week.

If you need more assistance I'll be glad to help you. Just let me know if my suggestion worked for you.

Cheers,

Hi Pedro!

Subscribed. Thanks. I tried the white group layer and it doesn't work. however, I do believe this is my user error. :) Thanks for your time. I'll send out the work to get done. it would've been nice to learn how to do this, since it would make my product launches faster. I do have the PS templates in a dropbox for anyone who wants to play with them to figure this out for tutorials.

Be well,

Lane
