Faster way to use the Help file?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys

I noticed the help file seem to be getting the information by streaming and for me it's painfully slow. Are there any plans to put the most recent help file in a pdf or other format for download? I found there are help files in the program's install folder but it doesn't appear to get the info from there and these may be out of date later on.

I am using the index file for the installed help pages in the meantime.

Thank you

Thanks for replying Lee. I tried the help again today and the reason I thought it was streaming is because every link I click on in the help file takes ages to show up, it really does feel like it is downloading each part of the help sections I am clicking on. I don't know why this is. It makes learning it really slow and tiresome, I'm talking around 13 seconds for each topic to show. For example, I click on Layers, the About, then wait 13 seconds and it finally shows in the right pane of the help window. Even getting a busy mouse pointer part way through like it might lock up or something. I wonder what is causing this?

I have noticed similar delays with other Mac apps that also have a large number of help files. Among the worst is "Mac Help," the one that shows up in the Help menu when Finder is the frontmost app. I always thought this was because the Mac help system tries to "phone home" to see if there are any updated help files before displaying anything because according to the activity lights on my ethernet switch opening the Help window usually results in what I assume is the Mac connecting to a remote server somewhere to check for that.

Maybe there is a flag or something that apps can set to prevent that (or my assumption is wrong), but this might explain the delay ... maybe.
