media.tv
Affinity Designer no longer seems able to insert an image into a group, such as a word of display text that has been converted to curves. I've done this several times before in the Beta, but now Affinty seems only able to insert an image into a single object, not a group. I've tried everything, including the 'insert into selection' tool, the 'fill' controls, the 'paste into' & 'place' functions, etc. Any ideas as to what's wrong or what I'm not doing right? Inserting an image into a group is a basic function of any graphics app. (The attached image was done in NeoOffice Draw.)
Staff MattP Posted October 31, 2014 Staff Share Posted October 31, 2014 Hi media.tv, You can't paste one object into the contents of all objects in a group - that's a strange concept generally and we don't have a special exception for images. What you can do though is set the fill of a group and that will set the fills of all of its children... so, make some text, convert to curves (if you wanted to - you could just leave it as text quite happily), select the group and then go to the Gradient Tool, change the fill type to Bitmap, choose your bitmap and it should work? :) Thanks, Matt

I forgot I had to use the gradient tool to do this. Other apps accomplish this effect in different ways. Some use boolean ops, some use 'paste into,' some use fill. As usual, Affinity's way is the best, letting you precisely adjust the image placement within the group. Is there a distort tool or perspective tool on the horizon? Affinity Designer is totally indispensable now! Thanks again.
Staff MEB Posted November 1, 2014 Staff Share Posted November 1, 2014 Yes, distortion tools (and a lot more) are on Affinity Designer's roadmap. Quote A Guide to Learning Affinity Software
