Use V2 or use Photo. I found no way practical way in Designer V1.

In V2, you could use selection from layer (which is missing in v1), invert selection, create new mask, deselect all. Delete the old mask or paint over with white in adjustment layers.

There could be a workaround in V1 for dedicated mask layers, but not for inherent masks.

for dedicated mask layers:

  • create new pixel layer
  • fill with white
  • create new pixel layer
  • fill in black
  • nest existing mask layer to top layer in white
  • Merge visible
  • rasterize to mask
  • delete or deactivate helper layers

In case you have an external keyboard , try the shortcut for selection from layer (shift-command-O) while a mask layer is active.

From memory it didn’t work when I tested long time ago.

Question 1) How to work around on v1?

Create a pixel layer? Fill with white? Then brush with black? Like that? Right?

Question 2) Is there a work around If the image is colorful rather than white and black?

We are talking about mask layers. Those by design have no colors, only lightness values.

my workaround is only for mask layers, not for the other layer types.

so come again and please say which type of layer do you have:

  1. mask layer
  2. pixel layer (inherent alpha channel )
  3. adjustment layer (inherent mask of adjustment layer)

or upload an example file and indicate which layer mask you want to invert.

For a pixel layer,

  • Add a curves adjustment
  • choose alpha channel
  • invert position of nodes
  • merge down
