Hi Im trying to add/place some text to an old map  - On Mac - and then place it into the body of the book.

But when I go to move the image (map) and text, the text remains behind when I move the map JPG. Is there a way of making this one layer, or picture frame, so it can saved as one image? I'm new to Publisher so it's probably a rudimentary issue. Thank you

I'm not sure what your screenshot is supposed to say about your problem and wonder why you don't show the Layers Panel while you mentioned it and seem to be aware of the relevance of the layers hierarchy.

Below are three variants of layer hierarchy (+ nesting) for image/text combinations.

  • Moving a currently selected parent layer (blue highlighted) with the Move Tool will also move its nested text and/or image layer(s).
  • Using a Picture Frame is optional and not required,
  • You can group more layers than in this example or use Groups inside Groups or Picture Frames inside Groups for instance.

To move (or edit) parent objects without affecting their nested child objects you would activate the option "Lock Children" which appears in the Context Toolbar if at least one parent layer is selected.

@M J Maguire For the situation you described, my approach would be to put the map image and text in a Group, with the text layers above the map layer. A Group makes it easy to move the layers as a single unit.

Another suggestion. The text on the map in your screenshot is difficult to read. If the text in the actual Publisher file is difficult to read, you could experiment with applying a light colored stroke to the text (maybe cream/tan) to help with legibility. I would normally prefer a white stroke for the text on a map, but since the text overlaps some white areas, I’m not sure if white strokes would be appropriate or not.

In reply to thomaso - you are ask about layers panel this is what I'm working with and I am new to Affinity so grouping and hierarchy is still a work in progress. My first screenshot was just to illustrate I want to pin text onto an image - map - and make it into one image

If this is meant to be a question/request: If you want to combine ("pin") an image with the text next to it you can do this by nesting the text layer in the image layer (as shown previously, in the green example with Picture Frame) via the Layers Panel.

Or you can nest ("pin") the image in the text frame and make the image follow the text position (+ use the Pinning Panel for detailed options), like so:
