Font selection on iPad unusable because it’s horrifically slow

Hi I’ve been a long time supporter of affinity and serif used to pride itself on being fast and serving its customers. I recently installed around 80 new fonts and the selection menu has become literally unusable due to lag.

but what is really irking me about this is the fact that people have made these complaints since v2 dropped and serif have made no effort to resolve that, instead giving us mundane things like barcodes which I really couldn’t care for. Please sort this out. 
 

don’t drop the ball. We chose you because you cared but since the canva acquisition I’ve even seen a drop in engagement in the Instagram posts. Come on guys I’m trying to run a business here. I’ve literally got no other options, my eggs are in your basket

If you installed them directly into the application, rather than using a 3rd-party font installer such as the free iFont, then you are probably experiencing a known issue logged as AF-367, which seems due to font management changes made in iPadOS 17.

The only known workaround, unfortunately, is to remove the fonts from the Affinity application and use one of the 3rd-party font installers. And the reason I call that "unfortunate" is that, the last time I checked, those 3rd-party installers could not handle Variable fonts. However, I have not checked whether that has improved in iPadOS 18. But the workaround should work if you only use Static fonts, or perhaps if you uninstall any Static fonts from the Affinity application, and only install the Variable ones directly in the application. That might cut down the number of directly-installed fonts enough to avoid the performance issue.

I have no idea whether Serif has plans to fix this, nor when.

I believe Fontster supports variable fonts.
