Re: Affinity Photo V2 (Windows 11)

Hi, I tried opening a jpg file downloaded from my camera's card. The message is "the file type is not supported" Does Affinity Photo open only JPEG files and not JPG?

I've renamed the file, moved it to Documents, but it made no difference.

The file size is 6,302 KB - is that too large?

Any help is appreciated,

Thanks!

Hi @Steffany and welcome to the forums,

Either file extension should be fine…

Can you upload a sample file where you see ‘the file type is not supported’ error message… so we can take a look…

I'm concerned that the JPG extension is not an option. Most of my files are JPGs.

Your file opens without issue for me in Affinity Photo on both Windows and Mac though just to be sure could you upload another image as a .zip file since the forums will apply their own compression to uploaded image files (sorry I should have requested that in the first place)...

The file format and file size shouldn't be an issue...

Do you open the files directly from the memory card or do you copy them to the computer first?

Hi @Steffany,

Many thanks for the zipped file, again it opens here on both Windows and Mac without any issues...

You could perhaps try a factory reset of Affinity Photo by holding the Ctrl key while launching the app. When you see the Clear User Data screen leave the first three options ticked then click the Clear button let Publisher finish launching and see whether that fixes the problem…

Note 1: A factory reset will reset any customisation you’ve made to the tools panel and context toolbar...

I don't understand that you can open the file and my PC can't

The first time, APhoto2 displayed the message that the file type is not supported, but then opened it anyway.

I'll try that, though I haven't customized anything, just struggled through, mostly.

It may make no difference but is certainly worth a try…

I’m assuming the JPG opens in other Windows apps?

Out of interest how are you trying to open the JPG file, are you double clicking, dragging the JPG directly into the Affinity Photo UI or right clicking on the file and using "open with" and choosing Affinity Photo?

Very few of my jpg files will open either using a double click (I have tried clicking at different speeds too) or even using "Open With".  I can only open a file by opeing it from the file menu (Open).  The application is useless to me if I cannot open my files without loading the app and doing them directly one at a time from there.  I have attached a sample file which will not open as described above.  The files open easily in every other application including Photoshop!

Which app do you currently have as the default app to open jpg files? If it's not the Affinity app, then double-clicking the jpg won't open it in the Affinity app, you need to associate the file extension with the app.

An alternative is to open the app, select one or more jpg files in Finder/Explorer and drag them to the Affinity UI if you want to open jpg's en masse.

To open jpg files I have set the default app as Affinity and all the file's icon does is blink once when I double click.  Previously "Open With" was set to P'shop, and when I use "Open With" with any other app such as a browser, preview etc. they open with no hesitation.
