Ldina Posted September 14, 2024 Posted September 14, 2024 I'm working on a new design in AD v2.5.5 on a Mac, using an Art Board. I'm creating hundreds of individual strokes using the Pencil and Pen tools. I have put my strokes into a Group for organization. Every time I create a new pencil or pen stroke (thus creating a new layer), it places the new stroke layer at the very top of the layer stack instead of in my Group or a selected Layer (capital L). This happens even if a click the "Insert Inside Selection" button or have a layer in the Group selected before drawing a new stroke. In the past, doing this placed the new layer directly above my selected stroke layer and kept it inside of the Group. Maybe I am missing something or have changed some setting, but I don't think so. This is very irritating because I have to move dozens of strokes manually into my Group afterwards. Is anyone else seeing this? Is this a new behavior in v2.5.5? Thanks. carl123 Posted September 14, 2024 Posted September 14, 2024 With the Pencil Tool selected make sure Keep Selected is ticked in the context toolbar Then select any existing pencil layer inside the group and new ones should stay in the group Quote To save time I am currently using an automated AI to reply to some posts on this forum. Ldina Posted September 14, 2024 Author Posted September 14, 2024 @carl123 Thanks, Carl....makes total sense. I tried that and it's not working! Perhaps it is a corruption problem just with this specific document. I created a New Document on an Art Board, and it works as expected, positioning the new layer directly above the one that was previously selected. Does anyone know if there is a way to Save As, copy/paste to a new document, etc, that will "clean up" my corrupted document? (I'm assuming it's corrupted at this point). carl123 Posted September 14, 2024 Posted September 14, 2024 Can you upload the document, it may be something else? Ldina Posted September 14, 2024 Author Posted September 14, 2024 @carl123 Thanks...Here's the AD file in its current incarnation. I'm currently working on the top left wing layer. Inside that layer is a Group named "dark Brown lines". There are scores of pencil layers in that Group and I want all of those dark brown lines to stay in that group when created. carl123 Posted September 14, 2024 Posted September 14, 2024 Try this one attached The Wood Nymph Artboard had nothing on it and I had trouble getting things back on it. So I deleted it and created a new one Check none of the 3 insert options at the top-right of the interface are not selected then try the pencil tool again Wood Nymph-1.afdesign Quote To save time I am currently using an automated AI to reply to some posts on this forum. Ldina Posted September 14, 2024 Author Posted September 14, 2024 @carl123 Thank you, Carl. Yes, your upload works as I expected it should. 👍😃 What changes did you make to my original document to make it work? I want to understand, so if it happens again, I can fix it. Thanks for looking into it for me. carl123 Posted September 14, 2024 Posted September 14, 2024 Nothing was actually on the Wood Nymph Artboard (it was empty) So, I deleted it and selected everything that should have been on it in the Layers panel Then used the Artboard Tool to create a new artboard from that selection Quote To save time I am currently using an automated AI to reply to some posts on this forum. Well, 'duh', on my part!! User error. 🫤 I'll know to check for that if it ever happens again. Thanks again!!
