Text style font family setting, how to specify the correct weight (Affinity automatically selects ultralight)

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm new to Publisher am trying to customize text style settings. Our company uses Source San 3, regular weight for most body copy. So I am starting with the text style Body.

When I edit Body, I can only find a field for Font family. I can select Source San 3, but not specify the weight. Affinity automatically selects the ultralight weight, and I can't figure out how to change that. I have tried formatting the text locally to be Regular and using Update Body, but that doesn't seem to work.

I have also tried applying No Style to the text and using local formatting. Even though the document shows Source San 3 and Regular in the fields in the upper left, and visually it looks like the Regular weight, when I export the document as a PDF, the PDF shows the ultralight weight.

Can you help?

Regards,
Betsy

Hi @Betsy Thinking Ink Press and welcome to the forums.

I assume that you have installed the font in the variable version. The Affinity programs cannot handle this. You need to install the static version of the font.

I don’t see an UltraLight weight in the static set. The lightest is ExtraLight.

Hi, thank you for responding! Yes, sorry it's Extra Light, not ultralight.

Source San 3 is a Google font set. I don't see a static version. I wonder if the Adobe version is static? We've used Source Sans in Creative Suite without issues in the past. I have a new computer and don't have all the same fonts that I used to. I also don't have a current Creative Suite license, but someone else at our press does, so I'll follow up with him.

Appreciate the help!

Google Fonts are typically supplied in a set comprising variable font TTF files, a copy of the Open Font Licence, a Read Me file, and a subfolder containing static fonts. For Source Sans 3, the files are as follows:

SourceSans3-VariableFont_wght.ttf
SourceSans3-Italic-VariableFont_wght.ttf
OFL.txt
README.txt
static [folder]

The ‘static’ folder in this case contains 16 TTF files.
