Hello everyone,

I'm currently working on a document that requires the use of end-notes for references. However, I've encountered a situation where I need to reference the same note multiple times throughout the document. Specifically, I want the same end-note number (e.g., "4") to appear on different pages, all pointing to the same note at the end of the document.

Is it possible to do so without adding manually the extra endnote numbers?

Thanks in advance for any help,
Sivan

Pretty sure that is not possible.

And I have to question the utility of it. If I am looking at reference number 4, to what will it point to? The quote from page 11 or 18 or 237? Would not Ibid and Op. Cit. be appropriate here?

I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.

You can use the cross references.

Instead of manually inserting the endnote number, when you want a new reference to existing notes (in green in my screenshot), insert a cross reference, pointing to the note you want (in blue) and choose the note number as text (in red).

— Not faster than manually inserting note number but if the notes change, the number and the reference will remain correct.

I join my test file:

Same multiple endnote.afpub

P.S. You can also personalize the text for the cross-reference, for example you could add "Please refer to note number <Notenumber>." or "Op. cit. in note <Note number>"…

Cross-references are the way to go. I use this approach in one of the books I'm working on and it works quite well. I've been meaning to add instructions for this in my manual so here is a draft for the next version.

  1. Using the Frame Text tool, position the text cursor where you want the additional reference to be inserted.
  2. Click the Insert Cross-Reference icon in the Cross-References panel or choose Text > Cross-References > Insert Cross-Reference.
  3. Select Paragraph from Link To and type the first few words of the footnote or endnote text to find the note.
  4. Select the note in the list.
  5. Delete the contents of the Text field. Click the caret icon on the left side of the field and choose Note Number.
  6. If the actual note reference (note number) is formatted with a character style, select that same character style from the Style Override list.
  7. Select Generate Hyperlinks if the document will be distributed digitally.
  8. Click OK. Publisher will insert a cross-reference field at the text cursor position with a value that matches the note’s reference number.
  9. If you did not select a character style from Style Override, select the field and choose Text > Baseline > Superscript. You can also select Superscript from the Super/Subscript list in the Character panel’s Positioning and Transform section.

Cheers,

Mike
