In Affinity Publisher/Designer/Photo 2.3.1, copied text in rich text (RTF) is broken when system language is Japanese. I have found this issue while trying out the Font Switch feature of Typeface App.

To demonstrate:

  1. Switch your system language to Japanese
  2. Restart your computer
  3. Open Affinity and create a new document
  4. Create some text
  5. Copy the text
  6. Open Finder and choose Edit > Show Clipboard
    (or open TextEdit and paste)

Tested on:

  • MacBook Pro 15 Mid 2018 (Intel)
  • macOS 11.7.10 Big Sur

I’ve heard that the same problem occurs in Monterey (Intel) and Sonoma (M2).

RTF commands start with backslash ( \ ) but it seems to be replaced with ( ´¥ ) due to extra escaping. (Note that some Japanese environment displays backslash as yen sign)

Can confirm, copying text when the system language is set to Japanese sets the following invalid rtf data to the clipboard:

public.rtf

{¥rtf1¥ansi¥ansicpg1252
{¥fonttbl
{¥f0 ArialMT;}}
{¥colortbl;¥red0¥green0¥blue0;¥red255¥green255¥blue255;}

¥pard¥plain¥fs229 Test¥fs0¥lang1024}

Instead of the proper rtf syntax:

{\rtf1\ansi\ansicpg1252 ...
