Affinity Photo Color select tool can I bring the selected color to the front automatically?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm getting a bit annoyed that there doesn't seem to be any way to make the color that I've selected with the color select tool to the front by default.

I select the color using I, I hit B for the brush in the hope of painting with that new color but nope, it's always in the back and I have to manually select it. Please say I'm missing something because I can't seem to find a way to make it so switching to the brush tool automatically has the new color selected ready to go.

If there's no option to do it, Affinity need to make it an option right away. Having to manually go to color panel, and manually click the new color to bring it to the foreground wastes a LOT of time, especially when doing it over and over and over.

You might be selecting/choosing/picking your colours using the wrong control for what you want to do – there are many ways to do it and they do different things.

If you use the Colour Picker Tool then the colour you pick – shown in the ‘wells’ on the Tools Panel – should automatically be set as the colour to be used with the Paint Brush Tool.

Hi @Beanie Draws,

By default in Affinity Photo, the Colour Studio has the 'Fill' colour well selected (default White) - however when changing to the Paint Brush Tool, this will switch to use the 'Stroke' colour well (default Black).

This means after opening a new document and using the Colour Picker Tool, you are selecting a colour for the 'Fill' well and not the 'Stroke' well, which the Paint Brush Tool uses.

Therefore if you open/create your document, then before using the Colour Picker Tool, use the 'X' key to switch Fill and Stroke wells in the Colour Studio - you should now find that the colour you pick with the Colour Picker Tool is added to the 'Stroke' well, and will be used when you switch to the Paint Brush Tool.

Alternatively, you can switch to the Paint Brush Tool first, then hold down ALT and drag with your mouse to colour pick from the document. This will automatically apply the colour you pick to the Paint Brush Tool.

I've created a quick screen recording below in an attempt to explain the above further -

I hope this helps :)
