Hi.

working with publisher,  newest version on ios. I am working with comics and would ideally want to do post on line art in the photo persona. I have noticed though, that the quality becomes more pixellated and gets an aliased edge when i change to photo. This makes it impossible to work with in photo, since you are looking at a different image than what will be exported.
this is not an issue in the desktop version where it works fine. The image used is rasterized and tiff format. I have tried with many files from many softwares. Same result.
when exported the resulting file is high quality and does not show the degradation that happens in photo persona.

seems like a bug, although it could be an ipad-issue. Running a 5th generation ipad pro 12.9

best regards,

Johann

Hi,

this is no bug.

Affinity supports different view modes in Publisher and Designer. Those use Vector view mode by default, but you can switch to pixel view mode or even use dual view of both.

Photo will always use pixel view mode.

Vector view mode gives the illusion of unlimited resolution, where’s pixel view modes always adheres to pixel grid.

The images imported are not vector though. They also display at their normal resolution in procreate or any other software. So it shows pixellated but higher res (not vector) in publisher and designer, and adds an aliased edge in photo, for some reason.

same if i draw with a pixel brush and attempt to get hard lines, or use treshold adjustment on a line art layer. As soon as i merge down or commit the adjustment layer it immediately gives it an aliased edge. If it was vector Iˋd understand it, but it is raster. And I see no reason why photo persona should add aliased edges to the image. Why would one work in a photo editor where the software itself makes the image not look like the original image?

additionally, this does not happen in the photo 2 app. (The standalone one , not persona.) And it does not happen in the photo persona of the desktop version of the app, using the same files. There the files open up in the native resolution and looks correct.

This is something I drew in photo and added a treshold to. Once it is applied it softens the edge in photo, not in the other two. The resolution is the same, but for some reason it softens the edge. Looks like the same issue with importing. Reason I think it is a bug is due to this happening only on ipad, and not desktop. If it was intended it would replicate in both versions,

Here is the same process in the photo2 app. Treshold adjustment applied to a pixel layer. Then merged/committed. No softening of the edges, which is how it should work.

Can you upload the actual file?

if the position of the layer is misalignment (fractional), this leads to blurry edges.

I get 100 identical rendering in Publischer, no matter which persona or view mode is used.

Cant reproduce thatvyour video shows.

the file itself shows anti-aliased edges on all objects.

Theafpub uses mm as units. This leads to fractional pixel positions.

you need to use px as units and align vector layers to whole integer positions.

And if you use 2 sided documents or multi page documents, a open bug leads to misalignment on consecutive pages as a 30 mm gap is used internally.
so better avoid publisher in combination with multi paged documents for pixel Art at this time.

Good to know about the double sided documents. Usually I run single pages and view them as facing to see how it will look, then turn off facing pre export since print normally wants single pages.

That solves my problem though. You saved the day sir. The solution was somewhat convoluted. I would probably never have figured it out on my own. Thanks a lot. Days of frustration have finally come to an end:)
