I wonder if your USB drive goes to sleep at some point I only use USB drives for storage. I did not notice any shutdowns of the drive at any point. This issue only happened in the Betas. In the meantime, you can save it by creating a new doc in Pub, and the Document > Add pages from file > … . You can then delete the blank initial page, open it in Photo and re-save it.
