Does Alt + Drag and Ctrl + Drag do exactly same things in duplicating?

Recommended Posts

I'm using Designer V2 on Windows. I've noticed that in Affintiy official YouTube tutorials, sometimes it's told that you hold Alt key and then drag mouse click to duplicate an object or even artboards.

And sometimes Ctrl + Drag.

I tried both and they work exactly same for both duplicating objects and artboards. So I want to know if they are both redundant? Or is there some difference that I'm not aware of?

According to the Status bar, the Ctrl modifier key is used to get a Clone of the layer and the Alt modifier key is used to temporarily switch Snapping OFF.

However, this isn’t always true since, for example, holding the Alt modifier key down before you start to drag the layer will temporarily set Snapping OFF and make a Clone of the layer, but then releasing Alt while dragging keeps the Clone but sets Snapping back ON.

To me this is a bit weird, and not what I would personally want, but I think it’s expected behaviour.

Hi @RustyDawn,

As I understand it, the Affinity apps support drag-duplicating objects using either the CTRL/CMD or ALT key - this is due to some creative apps using CTRL/CMD + drag, and others using ALT + drag to duplicate objects and therefore our team implemented both options, such that users would not have to relearn this shortcut when switching to Affinity.

I believe that the options will perform the same duplication function, however as Garry has noted there are some differences when using the ALT key, if you have Snapping enabled in the file.

I hope this clears things up :)
