I exported a simple one-page data sheet to PDF. Viewing the result in Adobe Acrobat and PDF Expert were the same — nothing like the file I created in Publisher 2.2 Beta. The font, Montserrat,  was dimmed and all one weight (no bolding).

Then I tried Helvetica Neue, and it exported to PDF without any problems — the same with Optima Pro. So was my problem, Montserrat?

I noticed I was using Montserrat variable fonts downloaded from Google Fonts. I deleted them and reinstalled Montserrat using static fonts.

Problem solved. There's probably more to it — I didn't reload the variable fonts to test them — but static fonts solved my problem.

Are variable fonts a problem?

Variable fonts are not supported by any Affinity apps.

Variable fonts are not supported - so what you get is the default master. My guess is you are on macOS which displays the variable font instances even though they are not supported. Which is confusing.

Do not install both the static fonts and the variable fonts from Google Fonts at the same time. They are made to be interchangeable so the style names in the fonts will conflict. Sometimes a font's development repository will also have a differently named variable font available which can be installed at the same time.
