Look carefully at your Layers panel and you will know!

You are trying to substract from an embedded Image file (which probably [the Image] is some bitmap/pixel data here like JPG/PNG). But those geometric add/subtract/etc. routines do only work/operate on shapes and vectors.

  • So for plain vectors you either place a vector shape representation of the bat, as a layer into that document and try to reperform what you did above ...
  • ... or in case of bitmap/pixel data and pixel layers, you switch over to the Pixel Persona and cover that left side of the bat with a "white filled" rectangle, so only the right half of the pixel drawing remains red visiable.

All in all you have to make yourself here clear what the difference between vectors- and shapes vs pixel/bitmap data is and also how to overall handle embedded/placed files in documents.
