For these purposes, Ctrl+J is not suitable, because the size will always be incremented by the defined value of the "new" object, i.e. the already enlarged object. You would need the gradual size increments to always be made to the original object, which the Duplicate function does not do. P.S. further clarification, Ctrl+J converts the size change to a percentage increment - that's why the enlarging object also manifests itself as an enlarging increment.
