I would quite like the ability to also have guides extend beyond the page limits

Can’t you just put a line outside the document, lock that objects and the use it with snapping option?

I have always found this useful in InDesign to mark custom fold lines before I applied the creasing rules and to mark out various areas of the page.

I don’t use fold lines or creasing rules so I don’t know what they are.

Can you explain a bit more about the process?

The more (relevant) information you give the better, so people can understand why you want it, and they might want it too.

Cut and creasing rules are commonly used in the print industry, you may design a custom sized gate or multifold document and the ability to indicate these is quite important both when you are designing and for the printer to see where the rules are.

I could do but I find the ability to do this in InDesign a better solution.
