Difficulties with Gesture Modifiers

Recommended Posts

I’m having some difficulties with touch gestures on iPad, but I’m not sure if it’s me, or a bug, or if the gestures are changing? Basically, a one-finger touch modifier seems to no longer work. In the video below, a one-finger touch should constrain the proportions of the square, instead, it takes two fingers (plus there’s that weird resizing glitch that happens sometimes). The odd thing is, sometimes one finger will work, or sometimes two fingers doesn’t work either, but a three-finger modifier works. Sometimes none of them work at all, it’s really inconsistent.

With the Pen Tool, when I use a one-finger modifier, I can see the point change to a cusp for a second, then revert back. A two-finger touch modifier will consistently change a smooth point to a cusp, but it won’t constrain the control handles to 45 degrees. However, a three-finger modifier will now both constrain the control handles, and edit the nodes.

Am I doing something incorrectly? Is there some setting I may have accidentally changed? Or is this a bug? I don’t use a screen protector, and I’ve cleaned any smudges off of my iPad screen, so I don’t think there’s anything interfering with the touchscreen responsiveness. Plus, other touch gestures, like undo, work perfectly.  I’ve also tried force-closing the app, restarting my iPad and turning off Hover, the results are the same. The video is version 2.0.4, but this also happens in the Beta (1736).

Hi Jocelyn a lot of our gestures changed for V2 such as 3 finger hold now being the gesture for resizing around the centre. You can read about the gestures that are now used in the app help found below.

@Callum Thanks for your reply, however, the gestures that aren’t working for me are the correct gestures for V2. I used both the help documents you linked, and this PDF that’s specifically for V2: https://resources.serif.com/spotlight/learning/shortcuts/Affinity-Designer-2-Gestures-iPad.pdf to verify that I was using the correct gestures. For example, under Draw and Edit shapes on the PDF, a one-finger touch modifier should maintain aspect ratio. As I demonstrated in the video, it’s not working for me. I can use the shift command on the command controller, but the actual touch gestures are not working properly.

Adding another screen recording that I think more clearly shows the difference between using shift on the command controller, and using a one-finger modifier. A one-finger modifier gesture used to behave exactly as the shift modifier does. Now the one-finger modifier starts to create a square, but then switches back. I also tried this on a 2018 11” iPad Pro, also running 2.0.4 but unfortunately the results were even worse. On the 2018 Pro, the gesture modifier didn’t even start to create a square, it just didn’t work at  all. 😔

@Island Girl @Xyz123The gestures changed from V1 to V2 so trying to get the old gestures to work and comparing the shift key to one finger press is pointless. It takes just a little experimentation to realise that often 2 fingers are required where there was one before or as stated in the PDF https://resources.serif.com/spotlight/learning/shortcuts/Affinity-Designer-2-Gestures-iPad.pdf, one finger on the COMMAND CONTROLLER which needs to be on screen for the one finger modifiers to replicate an external keyboard to work.
