Affinity Photo 2 crashing when fonts activated/deactivated in Font Book

Recommended Posts

If I enable or disable a font in Front Book whilst running Affinity Photo 2, AP2 crashes. This has now happened 3 times.

>> Are you using the latest release version?

Affinity Photo 2.0.4

>> Does it happen for a new document?

Yes, it does.

>>What is your operating system and version?

Mac OS Big Sur 11.7.1 on a Late 2015 iMac Retina 5k 27"

>> Is hardware acceleration (in Preferences > Performance) ON or OFF ? (and have you tried the other setting?)

No such setting in Big Sur, or at least not on my Mac.

>>  What happened for you (and what you expected to happen). Provide a recipe for creating the problem (step-by-step what you did)

1) Create a new document.
2) Add some Artistic Text.
3) Choose a font for it.
4) Launch Font Book. Switch a font from Disabled to Enabled.
5) Affinity Photo crashes.

>> Any unusual hardware (like tablets or external monitors or drives that may affect things) or relevant other applications like font managers or display managers.

I use an old Wacom Graphire tablet with Connect My Tablet app to get it to work properly. However, this problem did not happen with AP1, and I was running the same tablet app.

Aha. A good thought.

I've just tried this again by enabling and disabling what I would call professional fonts, and AP2 doesn't crash. So it appears to be an issue with third-party fonts, and only some of them. Obviously that means it's unlikely to be an AP2 issue at all but something wrong with the third-party font.

I do try to use only good quality reputable fonts, but I clearly need to be a bit more choosy.
