panjakrejn Posted March 4, 2023 Posted March 4, 2023 I am trying to make five pointed star with sharp tips and crossed lines. when I make it normally I get blunt star tips, so I go to Stroke Alignment and choose "Inside" and I get the pointy tips, but then it screws up the lines so it looks like five smaller triangles rather than 5 straight lines. How do I keep the lines crossing as in the first image, but get the pointy tips as in the second? Quote
h_d Posted March 4, 2023 Posted March 4, 2023 How did you draw the original star? Quote Affinity Photo 2.5.3, Affinity Designer 2.5.3, Affinity Publisher 2.5.3, Mac OSX 14.5, 2018 MacBook Pro 15" Intel.
Alfred Posted March 4, 2023 Posted March 4, 2023 You can easily draw a regular five-pointed star with the Star Tool, but the default mitre limit of 1.5 is too small for such sharp bends: Increase the mitre limit until the points are no longer truncated: For a pentagram, overlay a pentagon across the centre of the star: Quote Alfred Affinity Designer/Photo/Publisher 2 for Windows • Windows 10 Home/Pro Affinity Designer/Photo/Publisher 2 for iPad • iPadOS 17.5.1 (iPad 7th gen)
h_d Posted March 4, 2023 Posted March 4, 2023 My humble effort (a triangle traced over one point of the original star and then converted to curves and duplicated over the other points): (Needs a lot more tidying up...) star.afdesign Quote Affinity Photo 2.5.3, Affinity Designer 2.5.3, Affinity Publisher 2.5.3, Mac OSX 14.5, 2018 MacBook Pro 15" Intel.
panjakrejn Posted March 4, 2023 Author Posted March 4, 2023 OK, that will work, and I will probably wind up doing that (the bottom one), but I would still like to know why such a hack is necessary? Why can't I just draw five lines that cross with sharp points and no funky stuff in the middle? Quote

You can do it that way, too! As long as the lines are joined end to end, the mitre limit will still apply. panjakrejn Posted March 4, 2023 Author Posted March 4, 2023 I get it! Using the Align Stroke to Inside was a red herring, I see now that what I should have done to get sharp points is the Miter Limit instead!! Learn a few new things every day! Alfred and h_d 2 Quote
