When mask with such adjustment moved into group ro to other layer - Level/Curves effectively make mask pure white, destroing any gradients. It's possible it may have slipped/I got distracted at the time with something else and didn't fill it or my description wasn't clear/concise enough to find it quickly (I will have to take another look).
