open file via drag&drop onto program-icon in Aff V2 does not work

Recommended Posts

You could have just added the new post, with the explanatory video, to your original thread and the thread would have ‘bubbled up to the top’ of the threads.
That would keep all of the relevant information together in one place and made it easier for other people to find.
Adding new threads for existing stuff just makes things more complicated for everyone.

Hi @Christian5,

Thanks for your post and our sincerest apologies for the delayed response here. We are exceptionally busy following the release of V2 and we thank you for your continued patience and understanding here.

in Affinity V1 I could open a file by dragging and dropping it onto the programme icon.
In Affinity V2 this does not work!

Why? Is this a Windows setting or a programme error?

I can confirm this is due to how the desktop shortcut has been added for V2, in that the 'Target' is not a direct .exe file and therefore Windows does not understand that you are trying to open a file within the application.

There are 2 options to resolve this here.

Firstly, if you navigate to the application alias .exe files in the following locations, then right-click these and select Send to > Desktop (create shortcut), these will then allow you to drag and drop your images onto the shortcut to open them in V2 - however unfortunately these application alias exe's don't have a icon present and appears as such:

Affinity Photo V2:
C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\WindowsApps\AffinityPhoto2.exe

Affinity Designer V2:
C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\WindowsApps\AffinityDesigner2.exe

Affinity Publisher V2:
C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\WindowsApps\AffinityPublisher2.exe

Alternatively, we now offer the regular EXE version of the apps, where this should simply work as expected with the shortcut icons automatically generated when installing the app.

If you wish to swap from MSIX to EXE, please visit the below links and select the Also Available : EXE  options below the download button:

Photo - https://store.serif.com/update/windows/photo/2/
Designer - https://store.serif.com/update/windows/designer/2/
Publisher - https://store.serif.com/update/windows/publisher/2/

Then uninstall the MSIX versions through Settings > Apps and install the .EXE versions as normal. This should retain your custom saved content and creates desktop shortcuts, the same as V1.

I hope this helps :)
