I am attempting to load RAW (.ARW) files from my Sony Alpha One camera. It takes almost 12-15s to load a single .ARW file the app hangs (or seemingly forever). If I simultaneously attempt to load more than one file, it will take almost 40s or more to load and display the first file, the remainder of the files will randomly load afterwards, but the loading time is extended, often taking over 1 minute between successive files. I have both a Sony Alpha One and a Sony A7Riii. The .ARW files on both take as long to load.

Can we have one of your sample RAW files to test?

(You can upload one to the forum)

Thanks

Consistently 7 seconds in 2.0.3 (hardware acceleration off)

With hardware acceleration on it's 22 seconds when first opening the file then 7 seconds on repeated attempts

Until I restart APhoto then the first load time is 22 seconds again

(This weird behaviour is evident with other RAW files also, with hardware acceleration on)

1. Make sure you have 2.0.3 there was an error with RAW load times in 2.0.0

2. Switch hardware acceleration off (if enabled) and see what your load time is with this image

For which RAW engine, the Serif RAW engine or the Apple one? - Does switching the RAW engine over to the other on MacOS (aka Serif -> Apple) give you the same timings here?

☛ Affinity Designer 1.10.8 ◆ Affinity Photo 1.10.8 ◆ Affinity Publisher 1.10.8 ◆ OSX El Capitan
☛ Affinity V2.3 apps ◆ MacOS Sonoma 14.2 ◆ iPad OS 17.2

My results using the supplied ARW, using Serif engine and hardware acceleration enabled, on an Intel iMac running Monterey 12.6.2:

AP 1.10.6 = 2 seconds

AP 2.0.3 = 7 seconds

Far from the above figures, even after trying out the above suggestions. 🥲

I tried both Serif and Apple's RAW engines and both are slow, Apple's slight worse off.

Probably due to Serif's reworked V2 code base here. - For the Apple OS RAW engine, you can also see instead, if and how their Apple tools like Photos.app or Preview.app etc. handle your Sony .ARW RAW files then in terms of loading speed.

And since Serif's RAW engine is based on LibRaw, you can also see and compare how other free RAW converters (like RAWTherapee, Darktable, digiKam ... etc.) which are also then based (do rely) on LibRaw, do handle your .ARW RAW files then in terms of loading speed.
