Color shift converting from 32-bit Display P3 to 8-bit SRGB

Recommended Posts

I usually develop my RAW images to 32-bit Display P3 format for further editing. As we know to export final results for viewing on SDR displays, TVs and phones it is recommended to convert color profile to 8-bit SRGB. I did it many times and didn't see any visible color shifts after converting.

I am a bit puzzled to find that I can't convert the images I am working right now on without a decent color shift and luminosity changes.

Does anybody know what could be the problem?

Isn't it to be expected that when going from a wide gamut to a narrower one there will be a colour shift?  Since colours that are in the wide gamut but out of the narrower one must be 'moved' in order to fit into the narrower gamut.  If these 'moves' are done using relative colorimetric rendering intent that will change all the colours out of gamut to the nearest colour in gamut, so many colours change to the same one but it does not change colours that are already in gamut.  However, perceptual colorimetric rendering intent changes ALL the colours in the image in a proportional way so that they all lie in gamut.

Well, I have solved the problem. Looks like I have changed RGB Color Profile to Display P3 for some reason in settings and that happened to be a cause of the problem. I have put it back to SRGB and now everything works as expected.

@verton I tried, but it didn't work for me! 🤨
