This is going to sound weird but when I go to open a design file on my ipad it opens in photo?? is there a reason for this?  the files were both created and stored on my ipad (I do not have the desktop versions of the software because I do not have a computer only an ipad)

shouldn’t the file be opening in affinity design if that is were I created the file?  why would it open in affinity photo and how do I stop that from happening.

I should also note that it only happens when I try to click open a file from the files app on ipad, if I am in designer then they open where they are supposed to. please someone explain why this happens.

The file format used by all Affinity Photo, Designer and Publisher on all platforms is identical, the extension only signifies which package was used initially to create it, but subsequently any Affinity app can open any Affinity file.

IOS and iPadOS remembers what app has been used to open an app previously so it can occasionally get mixed up. The method I do to fix it is to use IOS Shortcuts, "Open in Affinity Photo" and "Open in Affinity Designer". Once you have these shortcuts installed, in the Files app, select the file then use the Share interface then select either "Open in Affinity Photo" or "Open in Affinity Designer". The file will then open in the selected package AND iPadOS remembers your selection so next time you select a .afdesign file it will open in Designer and vice versa.

These are what the IOS Shortcuts need to look like and here is an example of me fixing the problem.

thank you so much for this paul … seems like the perfect solution 😊

It’s only a perfect solution when you get it working, let me know if you need help with building the shortcuts although they are described in various places on the forums.
