I know I used to be able to change the blend mode of single image before, but for some reason I can't get it to work anymore. I can change the blend mode of an adjustment layer, but not the image itself. Is there a setting I need to change I'm not aware of or is this a new feature in AP? I've attached some screenshots to better explain. Can someone please help me with this?!

Caution: This explanation is very simplistic and some basic issues, such as colour channels/transparency/etc., have been ignored for the purposes of making it easier to understand.

The Blend Mode of a layer, to put it very simply, tells the software how the pixels of that layer ‘interact’ with the pixels below it.

For example, again very simply, if you have the Average Blend Mode applied to a layer, and a pixel in that layer has the value of 100, and the same pixel in the layers below that layer has the value 50, then the visible pixel will have the value of 75 – mean average of 100 and 50 = 75. Therefore, if you set the bottom layer to have an Average Blend Mode, the software will take an average of 100 (the only pixel value) so the result will be 100 (mean average of 100 = 100). The same sort of thing goes for the other Blend Modes but the calculation is different.

Because of this, the only Blend Mode which has any effect on the layer at the bottom of the layer stack is Erase.

Duplicate the background image then apply blend modes to that duplicate, that may get you the effect you are after.
